Hi,

I am from Philippines and was stuck choosing between these AM4 mATX motherboards
(Unfortunately, these are the only available mATX mobos so far):

  • Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 141$
  • MSI B350M Mortar 112$
  • MSI B350M Mortar Arctic 120$
  • MSI B350M Gaming Pro 116$

I've read similar thread here and everyone seems to prefer Gigabyte. Haven't heard so much for MSI B350M Mortar (I cannot see any difference between MSI B350M Mortar and MSI B350M Mortar Arctic on the official site except for the price). So I am very convinced to go with Gigabyte. Besides everyone seems to recommend Gigabyte right after Asus.

The problem is, reading their QVL from here:
http://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-AB350M-Gaming-3-rev-10#support-doc

Can't really figure out which ram works best with AB350M. There are only 3 ram supported and from GSkill it appears to support only 3200MHZ with CAS14. The other 2 brands with those specifics are completely non-existent in our place. I have very limited source where I can get 3200MHZ RAM for a cheaper price and on the store I am planning to buy from has the following RAM:

GSkill Ripjaws V 16GB Dual DDR4 3200 (F4-3200C16D-16GVKB) 16-18-18-38-2N $137
Gskill Trident Z 16GB Dual DDR4 3200 CL16 (F4-3200C16D-16GTZB) 16-18-18-38-2N $146
GSkill Trident Z RGB 16GB 2x8GB DDR4 3000 CL16 (F4-3000C16D-16GTZR)  16-18-18-38-2N  $149
Gskill Trident Z 16GB Dual DDR4 3200 CL16 (F4-3200C16D-16GTZSK) 16-18-18-38-2N $145

If you read the QVL from Gigabyte, it appears non of these RAM are supported.
MSI B350M Mortar, according to their QVL list, has lot of supported RAM that runs under 3200MHZ and its 30$ cheaper. What I just don't know if for example, it supports GSKILL CAS14 16gb with GTZ means it supports any GTZ-suffixed RAM  for example 16gb CAS 16 GTZSK? I am really confused. Does that mean, if I buy RAM, and is incompatible, my pc will not boot? Or lower clock than what I paid for?
I am kind of leaning towards MSI B350M because of huge number of supported RAM out of the box but first I want to know if Gigabyte AB350M + 3200MHZ G.Skill Ripjaws V 16-18-18-38-2N a will work together? CAS14 ram are very expensive here. I don't know if Trident Z is better than Ripjaws V with Gigabyte AB350M.

I am building for Ryzen 5 1600. Using it for software development (game dev, android dev, research), gaming as well. Heavy multitasker here, preferably wanted to work with mobile emulators and try Mac OS without booting. It appears I might be needing 32gb but 16gb will do for now.

Here is my intended specs:
Ryzen R5 1600 3.5Ghz (3.7Ghz Turbo boost) 6c/12t $246
RX 580/Sapphire NITRO OC 8GB GDDR5 ~$281
Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 $141
Gskill Trident Z 16GB Dual DDR4 3200 CL16 (F4-3200C16D-16GTZSK) $145
Cougar Dual-X CF D12HB 120mm Led Case Fan 4pcs $34
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB WD10EZEX $47
SanDisk Ultra II 240GB (SDSSDHII-240G-G25) SSD $76
Seasonic S12II 520W 80PLUS Bronze $55
Thermaltake Versa H15 Windowed Chassis $37

Total: $1062

Don't mind extra bucks for Gigabyte and Trident Z if they will give me peace of mind. Just wanted this pc to work after assembly. But would be great to know if MSI + Ripjaws V is also good combination as well for a cheaper, reliable, works right away after assembly and the difference against Gigabyte's is very unnoticeable.

Thanks!

First of all try Gigabytes X370 boards and you can put any DDR4 RAM but dont clock higher than 2666 MHz cause it can result with no post

My Rig : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MTBd2R

My VM Server : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rPR6gL

To see what people are already using with what motherboard look here:

And for macOS you will need Intel cause macOS is made for Intel's CPU's and chipsets :\

No need to suggest X370 chipset if his needs suit B350. Also you shouldn't just choose any DDR4 (for now at least)

Compare RAM at http://rymem.vraith.com and on manufacturer QVL lists.

This is trash advice :/

SAD. I'll just skip it then.

I noticed that on the link: http://rymem.vraith.com/specific/28

it says it support: F4-3200C16-8GVKB, can it also support this ram GSkill Ripjaws V 16GB Dual DDR4 3200 (F4-3200C16D-16GVKB)?

:| I tried on AMD and IT DOESNT WORK. WHAT PART DONT YOU UNDERSTAND HOW MANY AMD KERNELS ARE OUT THERE NONE OF THEM WILL WORK. MAYBE FOR HOUR OR TWO BUT LATER WILL KEEP KERNEL PANICING >:(

Are the RAMs I mentioned belong among those "very few kits"?

Not that I have seen.

Have you seen the memory listed at http://www.corsair.com/en-us/landing/ryzen? Or the G.Skill configurator at http://gskill.com/en/configurator?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I just checked that now. Well, none of the RAM I listed existed on the list. If I chose a RAM not on the official QVLs, would the RAM still work?

Not guaranteed to work.

If you can wade through http://www.legitreviews.com/ddr4-memory-scaling-amd-am4-platform-best-memory-kit-amd-ryzen-cpus_192259/6 there is some decent insight. https://community.amd.com/community/gaming/blog/2017/03/14/tips-for-building-a-better-amd-ryzen-system also offers some suggestions.

If you have a bit of time I would suggest waiting a month or two before committing to a build. That should provide enough time for memory issues to get sorted.

So its "not guaranteed to work". Sad to say, planning a Ryzen build is pain in the ass. Availability of some peripherals on our place is really scarce. There are some good stuff in the US not being sold here so I am stuck with this limited options. Having so many SKUs on RAM makes it all the more difficult. I am planning to just switch on using Intel + Nvidia if this the case. In fact, AMD release is very disappointing, at least in my country. Look at the price of R5 1600, its much cheaper if I go Intel. The availability of Ryzen CPUs, MoBo, RAM on launch date is zero and had to be preordered at full price without guarantee you'll have a stock.
