Posted April 18, 2017 Hi all, I have gotten my hands on a MSI 770-C45 (Am3 socket) motherboard. I have 2 cpu's I could use with this one, the Phenom II X4 955, or the Phenom II X6 1055T. Now the thing is that I know the overclocking limits of both cpu's, but not with this motherboard. So my question is: Would these cpu's (especially the X6) be able to reach a decent (about +500 MHz) overclock with the VRM temps in mind? I could find out myself, but since I wouldn't like to burn the vrm into oblivian I though I would ask Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/768445-oc-on-a-msi-770-c45/ Share on other sites
 Posted April 18, 2017 I'm not familiar with that motherboard, but there's no VRM heatsink so it won't be great for super high OCs however, keeping in mind that 500Mhz isn't extreme, and AM3 is a dead/dying platform anyway (so the motherboard doesn't really have a future), why not try it? Posted April 19, 2017 I wouldn't try to OC on a 7xx chipset. You could give it a go but make sure you turn your voltages down a good bit. Can't find much as far as OC with this board so it is a good bet that it isn't ideal to use. 8xx chipset boards aren't easy to find these days and compared to 9xx boards, aren't worth getting. Best bet if you want to OC either cpu is get a 970 board for $50-$60. You could always throw an FX on there if you can get one for relatively cheap and have better performance later on. Its risky messing with a cheap board from 8 years ago. i5 6600k @ 4.4ghz on Hyper 212 Evo Powercolor RX 480 8Gb Red Devil @1330Mhz Bottom line: Don't be a spaz or an 800lb gorilla when installing your expensive CPU, and you won't have any problems. --Phate.exe Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/768445-oc-on-a-msi-770-c45/#findComment-9701749 Share on other sites
 Posted April 19, 2017 Author Thanks @RadiatingLight and @Krillingt75961 for the advice. I am planning to put the X6 1055T in this motherboard and to overclock it to 1090T/1100T speeds. I found a very old page on the msi site listing the supported cpu's. The Phenom II X6 1100T is supported so if I overclock the 1055T (which is physically the same chip as a 1100T) to that speed I should be good as far as I know as long as I don't mess with the voltage.
