G - Sync screen stutters, no G-Sync doesn't ?

Hey guys,

So I have bought the Viewsonic XG2703-GS G - Sync screen. For the most part I absolutely love this screen. However I have a really annoying issue. If I am playing WOW or battlefield 1 G-Sync creates screen stuttering unless I put V-sync on in game or in Nvidia control panel. So my first question is this. Everything I read prior to purchase said how V-Sync and Adaptive Sync have issues, and the solution is to G-Sync. However everything I keep reading everybody says to turn on V-Sync with G-sync which seems like there is no point for G-Sync? If I turn off G-Sync and just use V-Sync it's literally the exact same? am I missing something here? because I can't notice a difference. And In BF1 if I turn off v-Sync and use a frame limiter I get screen stutter.

The interesting thing is if I turn off V-sync and G- Sync I seem to get more smooth frame rates comparative to using any other combination. I have ensured I have the latest driver but if anybody could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Sorry if my post wording is confusing xD

OK, something is wrong. What FPS do you get with G-Sync on and off (VSync off in both cases)

G-Sync only operates below the refresh rate of your monitor. If your framerate is higher than your monitor's refresh rate, you aren't using G-Sync. You can choose to either have V-Sync take over, or have nothing, by selecting V-Sync on/off in the NVIDIA control panel.

you can also have Fast-sync enabled when you go above the g-sync VRR

Well I have a 7700k OC to 5.1 Ghz and a 1080 TI also OC. Both watercooled so as you can imagine I am blowing the frames out the water. Doesn't seem to matter which game so to combat this I was using in game settings to limit my frames to around 140 about 4 below the monitors refresh rate and if that wasnt an option was limiting to 120.

Yeah that's why I was using in game frame limiter however whenever I do this no matter which variation of G-Sync I use I get screen stutter. Mind you it's not tearing its stutter. BUT if I turn off G-Sync/ V-sync everything seems smoother.

I read that Fast - Sync is like a more modern V-sync but without as much input lag and limited to when you go above the screens max refresh rate to bring it back down? The problem is that to the naked eye the results are the same as V-Sync for me. And I still get screen stutter.

there are reports of some microstuttering when fast sync is being used at high frame rates, so you could be onto something here. sadly there are no monitors that have g-sync VRR past 165Hz (when said monitor is certified able to overclock from 144hz to 165hz).

I haven't got it overclocked at the moment. What I don't understand is this. if I run the monitor with no G-Sync, V-Sync, Fast-Sync etc everything is buttery smooth no frame skips no frame tears no stutter. So by that logic if everything is running fine without any of the above mentioned technologies then I simply shouldn't use any of it. BUT I have a huge problem with this as I pretty much paid a couple hundred $ for the G-Sync variant and everybody raves about how smooth it is but I only get all the problems it's supposed to solve with it on.

Thats exactly what I thought as V-Sync introduces the whole input lag thing that G-sync was supposed to solve yeah?

Yes. V-Sync is likely to override G-Sync.

I don't know why people think V-Sync needs to be enabled at the same time.

what would happen if the game has forced v-sync? you could try turning it off via .ini tweaking or some other modification, but there are some games out there that force v-sync. or that v-sync setting is unavailable in the settings

it doesn't matter if I have v-sync on or off if G-sync is enabled i get the frame jitter. It's less noticeable in BF1 but in league of legends where you have to pan the camera quickly in team fights etc it makes it harder to see things and it's annoying the hell out of me.

Those games usually aren't that demanding. Or they have a framerate lock/cap.

I thought about this but it would seem unusual as all the titles I play have settings to turn V-Sync off in game. I would assume having it turned off in game would turn it off? regardless with V-sync turned off in all titles I get jitter :(

If your frame rates are going from 60 to 20 to 30 to 60 to 50 to 40 to 10 in the span of like 5 seconds, then G-Sync isn't going to help.

In all these games if I turn off my frame rate limiter my frames range from 200-400 in all those games. Admittedly if I am playing BF1 sometimes my frames jump from like 250 down to 170 regardless at no time do the frames fall below 144 which is why I set frame rate limiters in game to 144/120. With that enabled the frames very very rarely drop below the limit and if they do they only drop about 1-5 frames and at no time do they ever drop below 110.

If you are trying to get your frame rate above the refresh rate and you have a GeForce 10 card (Edit: Also apparently is available on GeForce 900 cards), you should be using Fast Sync.

I have both G-Sync and Fast Sync enabled on my system, seems to work fine in most cases.

I'm not trying to surpass my frame rate 120/144 is absolutely fine for me. Not much point in going over what my actual screen can output. And no point in making my GPU work harder to produce frames not necessary which is why I am capping it. It's just annoying me now that everything is smoother with G-sync/ fast sync turned off entirely

okay strangest thing. I have found that by limiting my FPS to my monitor refresh rate (144) in games gives me the jitter but if I limit it to 120 FPS no screen tear. Also This only works on Fast-Sync. G-Sync + V-Sync no matter what gives the Jitter. I also found some strange behaviour between Nvidia Shadowplay (the instant replay)
