So, I'm an engineer gradute looking for a machine that handles 3d modelling and gaming... I was looking for a new laptop at about 1500Usd but got really confused really fast. Its not urgent so I was wondering if waiting for a ryzen based  laptop would be best( if there isnt one out there yet).

Any guidance greatly appreciated

ryzen on a laptop might take a while, the current cpu's are all desktop class and they seem to be pretty content with that. My main parameter that I need answered is would you rather have a powerful chunky laptop or a thinner less powerful laptop.

I would be confident to say it's not even going to happen. I don't remember the last time AMD placed their enthusiast class platforms on mobile. I didn't happen with the Athlon, it didn't happen with the Phenom or Phenom II, nor did it happen for both generations of Bulldozer chips. Since Ryzen doesn't have integrated graphics like it's predecessors, it's even less likely it'll take over their APUs on the mobile side.

correct me if i am wrong but i do not believe any ryzen based laptops will be coming out in the near future.

Here is a gaming laptop that has really good specs from MSI if you don't mind the Gamer Aesthetic, Else you can look towards an ASUS or Dell Professional laptop.

linus recently did a review on the dell xps 15, I would give that a look.

theres this configuration that is around your budget http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/xps-15-9560-laptop/dncwxb1641sv2

or if you want the smaller dell xps 13 variant heres a good config http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/xps-15-9560-laptop/dncwxb1641sv2

Really mind opening. Thx guys!

Still, is a 1070 too much overkill or the 2 gb of extra ddr5 are worth it?!

no. a 1070 is great if you can afford it at that price point.
