Graphics card for 1080p 60hz gaming.

Hardwood9059

Hi everyone,

I currently have an entry level gaming system and I am looking to upgrade my graphics card, my specs are;

pentium G4560 @ 3.5 GHz

Gtx 750ti 2gb

ADATA 8gb ddr4 2400 MHZ ram

5400rpm hard drive.

I was looking at either the gtx 1060 or the rx480 as an option, one more I was thinking about, although it is a bit out of my budget would be the gtx 1070, so any advice on which I can go for ???

Would leave room for improvement whenever and if OP decides to get a better CPU.

But will take away from the budget for those improvements, which would be self-defeating. A 480 or 1060 are still decent, and putting that towards a more future-proof CPU is more sensible.

Not before it's bottlenecked by the 60hz refresh rate

Get a 480 or a 1060, whichever is cheaper.

True but not all games go above 60fps so it all depends on games OP plays most

So what? A bottleneck doesn't mean you drop to 2fps. It'll just be lower than the 1070 could be capable of. OP will easily be able to run over 60fps at 1080p.

Not that I recommend dropping that much for a 1070, when OP clearly has a budget rig for a reason.

Well no it doesn't, because even in those games if your CPU is stopping you from hitting 60 fps then it doesn't matter if you have a 480 or a 1070 -- there's no scenario here that makes the 1070 worthwhile. The 1070 is a great card for higher resolution than OP's monitor, or higher framerate than that CPU or monitor allow, so don't bother with it.

There is always a benefit to more frames. Getting a GPU and CPu that only allow 60Hz on your monitor is fool-hardy. You also have game like GTAV where the GPU does a lot of work rendering scenery.

I would actually suggest an RX 470 4GB if your intentions are 1080p gaming at 60fps.

It should perform within 20% of an RX 480

Those cards are quite overkill for 1080p 60fps at High settings.

I have a card which performs similarly to an GTX 1050Ti and I find that I can hit 1080p 60fps at High settings with no problem.

The mark up on cards like the 1070 (especially when there's no RX 490 opposing it) is always extreme. It works out far cheaper and beneficial in terms of features to buy cheaper products more often, than to spend a tonne and keep it for years. Just ask any of the Sandy Bridge E owners currently upgrading for things like m.2, or the GTX 690 owners who ran out of vram or needed a more up to date display port.

Ignoring all the bullshit above here is the real answer:

TLDR:

AMD's DX11 driver has too much CPU overhead, a GTX 1060 3gb or 6gb is the best option.

That's a good point, actually, I'd forgotten how shite AMD's driver was.

Well that's the thing I would only want to upgrade the CPU if i decide to go beyond 1080p 60hz which I don't plan on doing anytime soon.....so most people are recommending the rx480 more, is it because of the greater raw computing performance.

For that budget if a Rx 480 or 1060 will be an overkill for 1080p I would gladly take them.....

Mostly regular triple a titles, some CS GO, I would like to get about 60 fps on max settings at 1080p or the same with slightly reduced settings in the near future, 2-3 years perhaps.
