Why is my RAM's base clock just 2133MHz?

Why is my 3000MHz DDR4 RAM's base clock just 2133MHz? I have a Z270 and a G4560, shouldn't it be 2400MHz?

And before you ask, the G4560 is just for now (until I can afford an unlocked CPU)...

What mobo exactly, have you enabled XMP in BIOS?

Nope, I thought XMP profile was for OC and 2400MHz isn't OC.

You RAM is rated at 3000MHz, Your ram is not "pre" overclocked. You need to enable XMP for the ram to hit the rated speed, but you will be locked at 2400MHz due to your processor.

But according to Gigabyte's website, 2400MHz isn't OC, do I have to turn XMP profile on anyway if I wanna hit that frequency?

Intel does not "officially" say which CPU supports overclocking RAM.

 

2133 MHz is the JEDEC standard speed for DDR4 -- just like laws and regulations on the road for cars, there are regulations when making RAM for computers.

CPUs with LOCKED multipliers typically cannot overclock RAM.

For RAM to operate beyond 2133 MHz (in this case for the G4560, 2400 MHz), you need to overclock the Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) within the CPU itself. You cannot change the multiplier settings for a locked CPU -- EVEN if your RAM and motherboard supports it. The CPU will be a limitation.

 

As for your question to "What LGA 1151 CPU supports OC RAM."

CPUs that have an unlocked multiplier (e.g. i7-6770K, i7-7700K, i5-7600K, i5-6600K, i3-7350K, etc).

JJ from ASUS made a video talking about CPU / IMC and overclocking RAM.

The video has been taken down since ASUS got rid of that channel for a new one...will try to find another video for you.
