APOLLO (2 CPU LGA1366 Server | InWin PP689 | 24 Disks Capacity) - by alpenwasser [COMPL. 2014-MAY-10]

Sorry for the delay, I'm rarely online at the moment due to bad health.

Well, can't have everything. Maybe for a future upgrade. :D

Thanks, I needed some practice, and this was a good opportunity. I do rather like it (definitely more than MS Word and similar programs), although I must admit it can have its infuriating idiosyncrasies as well.

Hehe, awesome. I suppose it's not that rare of a name, yes.

No!!! You're not supposed to have bad health. :(

I just realized how I have had rigs with the same names as yours.

And that I have a LOT of them.

Thank you! :)

Well, both Delta and San Ace have a pretty large lineup of high-performance

high-quality fans, so I suppose it would depend on the model.

I don't have any 92 × 38 mm Deltas to compare these to though, so it's hard

to say for me.

Do you think ZFS is better than RAID ??

Well it's not that much off-topic. ;)

I think ZFS offers advantages in certain use cases, but I don't think it'll

make hardware RAID obsolete, or at least I can't see how it would in the near

future.

I'm not really an expert on what you can do if you want good RAID options

in Windows, but from what I can tell hardware RAID still is a very appealing

way to go if you want an extravagant storage setup in Windows. And I don't think

that's going to change in the next few years.

Even on Linux, there are just some people who prefer a hardware-based solution

for their use cases, and I think they'll stick around for a while yet.

As for other software RAID solutions like mdadm, those have their own advantages

over ZFS. For one thing, they're much more mature (ZFS on Linux, while generally

considered production-ready, still has a ridiculously long TODO list to work on,

and can still be a bit finicky at times, and Oracle's ZFS branch is probably not

going to be an option for many people). Also, mdadm specifically uses much fewer

resources (and doesn't require ECC RAM), whereas ZFS is highly recommended to be

run with ECC RAM, and as much as you can buy.

Leaving that aside, depending on how Btrfs and the OpenZFS project develop, in

the long run ZFS might start having difficulties on Linux. It's still quite a

hassle to get running in many cases, whereas Btrfs comes distributed with the

kernel (at least on some distros, not sure if that's the case everywhere).

So if Btrfs ever gets to a mature development stage (which will still take a long

time though in my humble opinion) it might start taking away market share from ZFS,

at least on Linux (I know that I would consider switching if it's more convenient

tbh).

So, yeah. I don't think ZFS will replace hardware or alternative software RAID

solutions. But I do think that it, or something with very similar functionality

such as Btrfs, is here to stay, since indeed it is a very attractive solution for

many use cases.

As for whether I think it's better than other RAID solutions I'd say it's better

for my use case. Despite its drawbacks (primarily setting it up and the occasional

quirk during usage, although it's been many months since I've seen the last one,

and none have actually caused any damage), it is overall very convenient, and does

what I need it to do (allow me to organise and protect my data), and all for

very low costs (basically, my time).

But I honestly would not recommend it to everybody, just like Linux itself. It

is the right solution for me, but other people have different needs and therefore

might need different solutions. :)

Wait what? How did I miss this?

Anyway... In Win FTW!

How would I know, it's been here for a while! :P

But yeah, I do like how it turned out, thank you! :)

Funny how I said this. My server is the most unstable thing in the universe :D

Even more unstable than the Euro? :P

LOL at the San Ace 92s, then Noctuas. Like that will help all the noise :D

Must have missed this before fella but I do like me a server. They're kinda like bigger women, heavier, but intellectually deeper and more fun.

Bring your old pic back, this pox belongs to another mod.

I know this is probably because of April fools as people here recognize mods and other members by pics.

Haha, yeah, the Noctuas came just with the coolers, so I might as well use them.

Tested running the CPUs without them (so, just the towers cooled by the San Ace 92s),

but temps got a little too high (especially on the rear CPU) when under load, so

I put the Noctuas back in.

It's not quiet, but with the sound dampening and in its own room it doesn't disturb

anyone in the apartment.

And yeah, I do like myself some server pr0n. :D
