X5650 (hexa core XEON) vs QHQG (skylake i7 engineering sample)

Go to solution Solved by Aphexxis,

Wow, they sure do.  These work with ddr3 right?

Yes, plus the 32nm XEONS have superior IMC's to the 45NM XEON or i7's.

Westmere-EP is a stronger and efficient design of Nehalem, a very very small IPC increase and superior gaming performance thanks to the much larger L3 cache.

Hey all, I'd like to build my mother a 4c/8t or better on a very low budget.  The X5650 seems to be the best option as it can OC to 4Ghz and has an extra 2c/4t over the engineering samples.  My big issue is confusion about getting a motherboard for the X5650

You'd need a X58 board I believe. You'd have to get one most likely used, and they don't seem cheap.

Whats your mum doing that needs 4c/8t?

You will struggle to get the QHQG to 3.5GHz.... I would get the X5650 and get an X58 motherboard. (X58 motherboards usually cost around $100)

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K | Motherboard: AsRock X99 Extreme4 | Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming | RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws4 2133MHz | Storage: 1 x Samsung 860 EVO 1TB | 1 x WD Green 2TB | 1 x WD Blue 500GB | PSU: Corsair RM750x | Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (White) | Cooling: Arctic Freezer i32

Mice: Logitech G Pro X Superlight (main), Logitech G Pro Wireless, Razer Viper Ultimate, Zowie S1 Divina Blue, Zowie FK1-B Divina Blue, Logitech G Pro (3366 sensor), Glorious Model O, Razer Viper Mini, Logitech G305, Logitech G502, Logitech G402

engineering samples are usually unstable cheaply made chips, they are for demo and testing purpose. prototypes are not meant for consumer use, i would avoid building a computer around a sample chip.

Yeah, it'll be between 100-250 CAD.

The QHQG costs 200 CAD and I can use any Z170 mobo (another 100)

The X5650 cost $50 and mobo around 100-250 CAD

They are not bad, but they are VERY hard to work with.

Do you know what mobos can OC and are compatible?  Also, I could set up a 2x X5650 system, would that be worthwhile?

All X58 motherboards :P

No, they draw a crap ton of power and you can't OC.

Building is nice, but I still keep recommending to look for sites that offer used systems.  servermonkey.com is one of these places and you can get a T7500 or a T5500 with a XEON Hex Core for less than $450, with 32GB of memory.  I'm pretty sure there are threads for OC'ing these.  They go through their stock pretty fast, so you may want to call and check for availability, but they have some major deals.

I'll get her R5 or an older proper unlocked i7 if these don't work out.  She just needs a good multi-core CPU because rendering on her i7 6500u is basically impossible

Oh, so it is for rendering..... Look into the Xeon E5-2670 it has multicore performance that is on par with the 5820K and it costs just $70!

E5-2640 for $40 at Servermonkey.com, and they ship international. 2660 for $70.  I think they're both Series V1, but they have a ton of others.
