I have an old sandy bridge system with an i5 2500k 8 gigs of ddr3 and a 660. I could build a brand new system as we speak but I don't really see the point.

However, I could buy a 980 Ti Used for around 300 dollars Australian (225USD) or I can buy a 970 for 185 dollars (140 USD).

I currently game on a 1080p monitor and was curious if a 980 ti would be overkill? I would have everything else ready (600W / Big enough case)

Would you say its worth it?

I'd personally go for the 980 Ti. It really is fast when overclocked.

It's kind of overkill, but if you push it hard enough, it'll balance out. Also, is the 2500K overclocked?

Also depends on the kinds of games you play.

Yea I've got it at 4.5 with a NHD14

How about a 980?

I haven't found any decent deals for the 980 that I would consider.

Depends on the games you play...On the more CPU limited games, the CPU will hold back the 980 Ti. I had no issues, but my games aren't that hard to run (Just JRPG games from PS4).

I had a 2500K at 4.6GHz, but upgraded over the summer for $100 to a 2700K at 4.9 GHz (It runs a lot hotter though).

I have both a 1070 and 980 Ti, and they play well with the 2500K, but it depends on the game and how many FPS want you want to push out.

Yea I agree, its just if I'm going to spend 185 for a 970 who cares if its another 115 for the 980 ti I mean as I stated before I could build a new system at the moment I just don't want to, I look at this as an escape sort of so I can get another 2-3 years out of my system if things are looking good. I will most likely lean towards the 980 ti at this point.

I just had a look at some similar threads and I've found that people with my 2500k oc'd at 4.5 still get bottlenecks with the 980 ti?

I think the 980 Ti is a pretty solid investment, do note, it only shines when overclocked. If you can get to 1.5GHz, it will beat a 1070. At least my 980 Ti beats my 1070...

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to keep the system for the next 2-3 years.

I will also probably upgrade to the 8th or 9th gen intel. I couldn't justify the $500-600 to get a 7700K still since I'm only a light gamer / mostly a coder and streamer. I also have my other PC for the heavy tasks (Xeon).

Obviously by Hybrid is whisper silent but my Gigabyte card @1500Mhz ran cool and very quiet under load due to only using about 50% of its power. Newer games will push it harder but I never heard it work hard with a 60fps frame cap.

Which version of the gigabyte card? Reviews of the G1 said it was like a jet engine under load. I never had that for my 970 G1 though.

Mine's a G1. It's loud as fuck if you don't cap the frame rate @ 1080p. If you cap it, like I said to do, it is silent. The 980ti has so much extra frames over 60 that when you cap it you only use like 50-70% of its potential allowing it to stay silent.

Huh, I have a G1 as well, but mine's somewhat loud, but too bad to me. I use mine for vray rendering too. I did change the thermal paste / thermal pads though. It sits at 66C at 68% fan speed while OC'd / rendering

1.45v, but had to upgrade from a Hyper 212+ to a H105 to keep it cool. Although it is actually fun to overclock...from 3.9GHz to 4.9GHz.

I'm fine with my G1 hitting 80-87c so I run my fan speed really low.

I'm hesitant to go over 1.4 but I may for 5Ghz fun.

Yeah, I have mine rendering so I let it go faster. I tend to try to keep my GPUs below 80C.

Yeah, I think I topped out at 4.7GHz at 1.4v. I wanted to get to 5GHz, but I kind of don't feel good about going over 1.45v.

I ended up getting the 980 Ti. I'm going to try OC my 2500k to around 4.7ghz so hopefully that will suffice, I just gotta wait now about a week for it to arrive.

Most likely will end up upgrading my old Z68 system in the next couple years
