Can I get 3V using 2x1.5V batteries?

Connect two similar batteries in series (ie + to -)  ->  double the voltage. 

Connect two similar batteries in parallel   ->   ->   ->  double the capacity.

I'm not really sure about this? I don't think you can add batteries for higher voltage (only for higher amperage), but is there any other simple way?

Yeah, connect the positive lead of one to the negative of the other and the other two leads will give you 3v.

Series increases voltage(Volts), parallel increases capacity (milliampere hours). 2 1.5v batteries in series will yield 3 volts nominal voltage.

Yes and no.

In theory yes, put batteries in series and you get higher voltage.  Put them in parallel and you get more capacity but same voltage.

 

In practice... there's several kinds of batteries.

 

Alkaline AA batteries have about 1.65w when fresh out of pack, new, and discharge slowly as they're used down to about 1.4v  so 2 in series could be anything between 2.8v and 3.3v

Rechargeable AA batteries (ni-mh) have about 1.35v when fully charged and when almost empty they're about 1.15-1.2v  so 2 in series could be anything between about 2.3v to 2.7v

There's also lithium AA batteries that have a "fresh" voltage of up to 1.8v so if you put two in series, you could have as much as 3.7v or even more.

 

So you don't really have 1.5v batteries .. 1.5v is just an average voltage for heavy duty or alkaline batteries.

If you need an accurate voltage, you'd have to resort to voltage regulators which is another subject altogether.
