Ok, so I picked up a Netgear 48 port switch, it is a Netgear gs748t... but I am having trouble figuring out where I plug the internet in to the darn thing. I have a Catalyst Express 500 series and I want to swap over to this other switch.

Ok the modem is plugged into the router, the router then is plugged into the poe switch i currently use, the catalyst.  I cant seem to find the same type of port on the netgear poe switch.

Well the manual I found say " To simplify the procedure for attaching devices, all RJ-45 ports support Auto Uplink "  So any port should auto uplink, well I did plug it in, then plugged in my computers.  All the lights work when the switch is powered on and the uplink light turns on but the computers dont connect.  I reset back to factory default and I also did a normal reset.

don't connect? how you tested this?

were you able to ping the router? does the machine has a static IP or does it via DHCP?

Well, the lights dont turn on like they do on the bottom switch.  I assumed the lights would turn on if they were connected?  The only thing connected is the router to the switch.  When I plug a computer in it doesnt power an LED so I thought that port had no connection.

no, the light will turn on if the handshake goes well between the devices

if you have no light, the cable might be borked or the port in the switch, or the network card in the computer

Ok, I thought this switch was a PoE, it says it is in the manual - Smartswitch?  But it also says PoE later on.  I plug in the computers and they work.  I was plugging in my business phones that power using PoE and they were the ones not lighting up.  So I guess I need to plug only computers in the top and only phones in the bottom... which doesnt make sense if this is PoE... Unless you know of another way.. (wishful thinking) The manual says it is PoE but the phones are not working.  I did a speed test and my computer has 100Mbps like it is supposed to but the point was to only use the netgear, not use both.
