I'm overthinking this and it's driving me crazy, seriously. I want the MSI because it's cheap for a 1060 laptop BUT it has a DVD drive which I hate cause I won't use it anyway and only 128gb of SSD space and 8gb RAM. Whereas, the ASUS laptop which looks a lot better, similar specs with no SSD (I'll be buying a 960 EVO 500GB for it) no DVD drive and it has a G-Sync panel (which is a massive bonus, but will be losing Nvidia Optimus).

So basically,

MSI-

6700hq

8gb ram

128gb ssd

DVD drive :(

GTX 1060

IPS panel with no G-Sync

ELAN touchpad drivers

ASUS-

6700hq

16gb ram

no DVD drive :)

no SSD but will be buying, 960 EVO 500GB.

GTX 1060

IPS panel with G-Sync :D

Windows touchpad drivers

I do plan on gaming, photo (mainly lightroom and photoshop) and video editing (mainly adobe premiere pro), usual browsing, watching videos, doing work etc etc. For the games, I will be playing BF4/BF1 at medium settings, Overwatch at high settings and F1 2016 at medium/high settings.

**Feel free to suggest another laptop.

OR........................ should I just get the Dell XPS 15 for dat sexy battery life and forget about gaming on it? or will the GTX 1050 be still capable of playing the games I listed?

Thanks in advance,

Sean.

Get the asus, the extra ram is more important if you are editing (photoshop batches manages to fill my 16gb, even chrome will shoot through 8gb!). and I assume warranty will be void if you add ram as well.

Check the warranty of the asus though and make sure you don't void it by adding an ssd.

Kind of the same boat I am in, except its between the xps15 and the p650hp6-g...If it was just between msi and asus i would get the Asus and buy a cheaper SSD (12 more gigs >.o), because even upgrading your ram would void the waranty on the MSI i think and I personaly would want 16.  The Asus you have 2 smiley faces, and if your going to spend over a grand you might as well be happy with it...although the Asus has heating problems and not a big enough charger still maybe? Something to look into.  I didn't know that skew of the Asus had TB3 weird...

Lololol, this is EXACTLY the same boat that I am in, only difference is that I have an extra laptop in the mix to pick from (gs63) so it's pretty hard to pick one out. My favorite is the msi gs63 but apparently thermals aren't the best on it so I'm tempted to go for the ge62 since it's a bit thicker which means more room and hence better cooling and so on. The xps is also a good option, athough it is a bit more expensive than the rest, and there's no guarantee that you can play those games on it since it does have a gtx 1050. Also thermals on the xps won't be as good as the msi or the asus so you have to also keep that in mind.

It's reasons like these that make me unable to make a decision :(

Also I don't really like the red wasd buttons on the asus, if they were normal like the msi I would go for the asus. I hate buying new stuff like this, so hard to choose.

Yea I don't like the orange buttons either, if he wants to pay a little more the silver kabylake one is a little more bearable, they are outlined in red instead.

This can help if you decide to go the xps route to help it get better thermals. (underclock and repaste)  Could do on any of them though I guess except the msi because of the waranty sticker.

That's not really much help :( they are still orange. I just don't understand how having orange buttons or orange outlines are pleasing to someone who plays games and how they would help in any way being on the keyboard buttons lol? Am i likely to forget where the wasd buttons are maybe or what's the deal!

And I saw the xps video within 2 minutes of it coming out :D I don't know tho if that's something I'd be willing to do with a new xps 15 if I choose to buy one :( How bad is the xps temps and thermals compared to say the msi gs63?

you can add ram and storage in the MSI, they said you can and it wont void the warranty. but if you mess around with the internal components such as the cpu and gpu then your warranty will be void.

I'll make sure to check the Asus warranty.

For the warranty, check above post. What do you mean "has heating problems" it has around the same thermal temperatures as the MSI :P and I'm pretty sure the charger is made to supply enough wattage? If that's what you're talking about. It's not TB3, it's just USB-C 3.1

the ge62 is a good laptop, the thermals aren't that hot from what I can see from the reviews I've read/watched. The GS63 is good and also thin but it's more expensive. The XPS looks sexy as hell I'm not gonna lie, but it's only a 1050 :(

which asus laptop is this you're talking about? can you link me please?

to be honest, I don't mind the orange keys at all, it's something I can ignore as the days go by and not be bothered it.

I am not sure compared to eachother, I do know that the xps15 throttles after a while though. If you do go for a gs63vr dont get it from bestbuy because of screen.

Alot of info here about the kabylake version that does have TB3

I'm not sure where I read about the thermals but it mainly had to do with the screen blocking the vents when its open.  I also think I researched the gl502vs more than I did the vm so I am probably remembering wrong.
