Hello guys! I have a 1440p 120hz monitor, a gtx 980 and a rx 480. My friend is selling his gtx 980 for the same price as a brand new rx 480. Now I'm confused whether I should get the gtx 980 or a rx 480. Please help which card will give raw horsepower to run games in sli or crossfire and which solution will give better scaling in games. I don't care about DX12. My main focus is better results in games at 1440p. So help me decide whether I should go with 980 sli or 480 crossifre.

What rx 480 do you have? If it is the 8gb version then get the two rx 480s. If it is the 4gb model then it wouldn't make any difference which one you choose.

Go for the GTX 1080(Ti) instead. It's better to have one Powerful card instead of to less powerful ones.

but surely two 980s are quicker than a 1080ti? and it means he doesnt have to go through all the hassle of selling the GPUs. It definately is a dilemma

There is no problem with power consumption. I have a 1200W PSU. I'm only facing the problem of selling the 980. I have been trying to sell the 980 for more than 2 months and is gathering dust only. So I thought if I should get one more 980 or an rx 480. Buying the 1080 is no option for me as its very expensive and even if buy it my rx 480 and 980 will be completely useless. So a 1080 is no value for me.
