Well, how would you know if a motherboard is overclockable?

Any P35; P45; X38; 750i or 780/790i based board will be geared for overclocking. G series chipsets should be avoided when trying to overclock as they are not very reliable.

The best in my experience were P45, X38 and 790i based boards with the 790i boards being the most feature-friendly (but temperamental) for overclocking.

What is the cheapest motherboard out there that can overclock a Core 2 Quad Q6600?

Ebay definitely, though it's gonna be pretty expensive because of its age.

You're gonna be better off if you get a better CPU because the motherboards will be cheaper.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

yes

they're both very old and motherboards are expensive as a result

First check the manufacturers website and also the motherboard might have a z or x in it's name, i don't know if that counts for lga 775 tho... and what ram are you using???

Okay, these are the options I have:

Which would you say is the better overclocker?

The P5Q SE is the better and newer of the two boards, but the P5K would work if required.

I have another question. Will I be able to overclock a Xeon X5450 by doing the LGA775 to LGA771 mod on this motherboard? I am not exactly sure how all of the BIOS flashing works.

Yes, you can overclock using either the CPU multiplier or the FSB speed. Having a better motherboard means you can push the FSB speeds higher (usually) for a much higher overclock. The limiting factor is usually RAM as it's speed is directly linked to the FSB speed on most motherboards.

There are some like the 790i Ultras and X38/X48 boards that allow you to run your RAM unlinked which removes that particular issue.

As far as using a Xeon beyond the actual physical modification the process is the same, and 99% of the time a modded BIOS is not required.
