do you need a receiver

Hi everyone, im a noob at audio so this might be a dumb queation but do you need a receiver for surround sound? Can you just output 5 channel audio from a pc soundcard and have the speakers be powered from a wall output?

Most computer speakers and HTiB systems do not need a receiver as they are powered by either the sub or some sort of control box, these are known as powered speakers. You can hook up 5.1 PC speakers to a dvd player and do that, but if you have passive speakers, which most people do for home theater, you will not be able to give them a signal without a receiver/amp.
