MS browser bug lets attackers crash or take over IE11 and Edge

Apparently there's a bug in the code of IE11 as well as Edge that allows attackers to crash or in some cases even hijack said browsers.

Google has released details of a bug in Microsoft's browsing programs that would allow attackers to build websites that make the software crash.


Google researcher Ivan Fratric said the bug could, in some cases, allow attackers to hijack a victim's browser.
The bug was found in November, but details are only now being released after the expiry of the 90-day deadline Google gave Microsoft to find a fix.

 

Microsoft has yet to say when it will produce a patch that removes the bug.

 

Seeing as Google is reluctant to release more info on how the bug works before it is patched, this must be pretty serious. 

The most sad thing about this is that MS apparently is trying to make Google extend their 90 day deadline.  3 months should be plenty, it's not like MS doesn't have any programmers ... unless they fired those too.

 

If you use IE11 or Edge for anything other than to download a proper browser, you may want to reconsider this at least for the time being.

Isn't this like the umpteenth time google found a bug in microsoft's software, Microsoft didn't fix it, and after 90 days the info was released?!?

Don't worry Microsoft is pushing an update that removes IE11 and Edge and replaces them with chrome.

Yup. I still think something is up with this - seems fishy that Google is doing this while simultaneously bugging you constantly to download Chrome if you're using Edge or another browser if you go to Google.com.

If only this is true... Of course, then I'll have to go to some other browser so I'm not on something Microsoft will mess up.

Whenever you install/reinstalling new Windows, ignore IE\Edge.  Just run your custom installer/update from your thumb driver, and your favorite browser and other apps ready to go.

Meh, no news here.

My question is was the bug found in the preview version or the released version .. kinda makes a big difference. imo

I use Edge every day. Millions of other people do too.

 

IE is still used by some for weird reasons.....
