AMD Ryzen has issues with high frequency RAM! - Fix will come in 1-2 months

All in all AMD Ryzen is having issues with 4 sticks of ram, while running with high speeds of RAM sticks

 

It is recommended to only run ram sticks at max speed of 2400mhz if running with 4x sticks of ram... However it is possible however to run with 2x sticks of ram with a max speed of 3200mhz...

 

This is due to the focus of performance optimization to the CPU that other things have been left in the dust.. but a BIOS fix is comming in 1-2 months to fix this issue.

As it stands the AMD code has restricted RAM tuning options which means many RAM kits at launch will not be compatible. This is the same for our competitors also.

If fully populating a system with 4 DIMMs (2DPC), use memory up to a max of 2400MHz.
If using 1DPC (2 DIMMs) ensure they are installed in A2/B2 and use memory up to max of 3200MHz. 

The indication I have received from HQ is that AMD has focused all their efforts on CPU performance so far and will release updated code in 1~2 months when we expect improved DDR4 compatibility and performance." 

In short if filling all 4 DIMM's set your speed to 2400MHz and work up from there.
If using 2 DIMM's put them in the A2/B2 slots and a max of 3200MHz should be possible. 

In our testing only the Crosshair board achieved 3000-3200MHz, the others were in the 2400-2666MHz range. 
BIOS updates will come!

Yay nforce chipsets all over again

 

Also, its not like Intel chips don't have issues with memory controllers running 4 high speed sticks(they do sometimes)

OH NO! you mean i have to go into bios and set ram to lower speeds for a month or just not set XMP profile for a month, how infuriating that they are probably working on getting a fix for this before launch and early adopters should expect flawlessness

17% improvement going from either 2133/2400MHz RAM to 3000MHz RAM with an OCed i5 6600K...

Am I kinda cherry picking? Yep but it can make a considerable difference...(hehe, 8320 wrecking the skylake i5...)

2400 is like, minimum for ddr4....

Almost all DDR4 is 2400 and above.

And does it really matter? Has everyone forgot the shit show with X99 when it was first released? :D (albeit not this bad I guess). Plus this is only a minor issue if we were all to be honest where most people will probably be only running dual 8GB sticks...like all higher end builds right now...

Isnt this why we wait on boards anyway? Waiting for the feature sets we want. 

 

I get its an issue, but anyone who preordered is very unlikely to be someone looking for these higher speeds.

Not really (cas letency part), and it does depend on the game whether ram speed will be a big boost or not, Fallout 4 for example give you big gains while something like Witcher probably doesn't (CPU intensive titles are generally more % improvement)

Linus has been called out on this but never gave a response, there are scenarios where RAM will boost your FPS by a huge margin (iirc Fallout 4 gets 20%+ more FPS). Here is MageTanks thread. It's more than a year old btw, we have goodies like 4266 MHz RAM now. 

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.
