PCIe lanes for gtx 1080

millerb415

im rocking an i7 4790k and do to my school not having hard wired ethernet i have a wifi card in my computer. i know that i only have 16 PCIe lanes and that when i use the wifi card it takes up four of them dropping down the gpu to 8 lanes. does anyone know if that affects a gtx 1080s performance or not i know with the 9xx series it did not but i do not know about the newer cards.

you can also get a USB wifi adapter and since you have a wifi card and it's best to have a test on the same components your using you can test it run a video card benchmark write down the benchmark number then take out the wifi card and do it again and see if there's a difference and you may also want to try it in actual games since it may throttle in benchmarks but work fine in games

Never seen any Haswell chipsets that don't support extra components.

Ran my 1080 at x8 with my 4790k. Didn't notice anything out of the normal. I monitor almost everything while I play and if anything effects my game play in sure to narrow it down and fix it.

If they own a 4790K it should be Z97, which has 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes. Even H81 has 6 PCIe 2.0 lanes. There isn't a possible option I'm aware of that wouldn't have a couple of lanes for a wifi card.

so you mean 16 pcie lanes 6 would not end very well but yeah chipsets have certain ways it can split up lanes in the case of the of most z97 boards its either one x16 or 2 x8 and then you get some crapy 1x slots as well

True..but u can find them on google.

It has additional X8 PCIE.2

However dont plug them in the pcie slot that share lanes with the gpu.

That's all of them on most motherboards in the z97 chipset that's why you should probably wait for the op to reply... instead of guessing also never assume logic it could be a h81

but you can only cut up the lanes in certain ways either 1x16 or 2x8 or 1 x8 and 2 x4s but this cutting depends on the motherboard as well so yeah wait for op to give his specs

No, I mean 6. The H81 chipset has 6 PCIe 2.0 lanes, and Z97 has 8 PCIe 2.0 lanes. The CPU has 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes of its own. These are separate. This is why you can install a GTX 1080 in PCIe 3.0 x16 getting all 16 CPU lanes, and still have lanes left over for a Wifi card in an x1 or x4 slot.

Yes but those are lower speed and are cut up into 1x 2x and sometimes x4 it tends to be just a lot of 1xs though it depends on the motherboard which we still don't know so as i said before we should wait.... for him to give us his build specs so we can give him an accurate answer to his situation

And thats why u should look up at the OP profiles and check his specs.

your yet again assuming it could be a different build  people aren't always working on their main machine just wait for op

What kind of WiFi card needs 4 lanes?

Usually it's just one or maybe two at a push.

Anyway, you'll be fine on 8x. WiFi card probably isn't even touching the CPU lanes anyway.

It doesn't matter. It wont make a difference. Unless his 4790k and 1080 and significantly different  then mine, he wont notice anything.
