Canon launches a 4096x2560 reference monitor

What? I grant you the body optics are behind in some segments but build quality is usually top notch.

No DSLR maker uses more plastic in their housings than Canon.

Plastic comes in various forms and shapes, and I would take good, tough, weatherproof plastic any day over metal. As a wildlife guy myself, I see about 5-10 Canon bodies (7D+ build quality) to every other manufacturer. I see you are a journalist and photographer so I am surprised you consider plastic as weak. The lighter weight must also be a bonus for you :D

Of course, all this above is considering into account bodies that have decent weatherproofing. Low end bodies can't be expected to have a metal housing.

OK, let me rephrase: Canon's plastic feels cheaper than, for example, Nikon's plastic. And Nikon uses less plastic, and more magnesium. I just couldn't trust a Canon, especially judging by the rate my colleagues send Canons back to shop for repair.

Also if you are in America, seeing a lot of Canon is not uncommon, seeing as Canon is the main seller there (for patriotism reasons) go to Europe, Asia... Actually anywhere BUT North America and you'll find that Nikon is the dominant brand.

Canon? Really, with the build quality of their cameras (hint: it's lacking compared to their competitors) I really would advise against spending €32K on what is essentially their first foray into a new market.

Personally not a fan of Canon but their high end stuff has just as good build quality as Nikon tbh. They are lacking in other departments and their products are not as good as Nikon IMO but their high end stuff has never lacked build quality.

However, Canon has a terrible habit of reaching goals cheaper than they should just so they can tack on a marketing number, here that being 4k. As someone who studied in a college with a large film school and worked with film peeps (basically seeing the high end tech) I would not touch this with a barge pole. If for no reason is that, knowing Canon, it will not outperform its competitors and it will be more expensive then its competitors.

Reason being multiples of 8 :P just like RAM Glenwing

But... but... 4000x2500....

The funnier thing with resolutions, is we had 1280x800, 1440x900... then some idiot decided to skip 1600x1000 of all the 16:10 aspect ratios to skip, and go with 1680x1050 instead... *insert Logan facepalm*
