GTX 1060 vs RX 480: The Verdict

PCGuy_5960

I decided to make this thread to clear up some misconceptions regarding the RX 480 vs GTX 1060 debate.

GTX 1060 3GB vs RX 480 4GB

Get the RX 480 4GB it is faster and cheaper. Consider the 1060 ONLY for 2015 and older titles.

GTX 1060 6GB vs RX 480 8GB

Reasons to consider the 1060:

  • G-Sync (Freesync is cheaper though)
  • Nvidia FastSync
  • Nvidia SMP
  • Nvidia Ansel
  • ShadowPlay
  • Around 10% faster in 2015 and older titles
  • Slightly lower power consumption
  • Nvidia DSR
  • Virtual Super Resolution

Reasons to consider the RX 480:

  • AMD Freesync (Especially if you are thinking of purchasing a new monitor)
  • Crossfire (Not recommended IMO, but it will allow you to install a second GPU and get GTX 1080 like performance)
  • 2GBs more vRAM
  • Around 10% faster in DX12/Vulkan titles
  • AMD ReLive (Shadowplay is a bit easier to use though)
  • More "futureproof"
  • Radeon Chill
  • AMD Zerocore (For Crossfire only)
  • AMD Eyefinity

I would like to point out that in 2016 games, the RX 480 and the GTX 1060 perform similarly (within 5fps of each other)

Conlusion

The RX 480 4GB is better than the 1060 3GB in most games, it is also cheaper, so between those 2, get the RX 480 4GB.

The RX 480 8GB and the GTX 1060 6GB are really close in terms of performance. The 480 pulls ahead in Vulkan and DX12 titles, while the GTX 1060 pulls ahead in DX11 games.

In 2016 games, they perform identically.

TL;DR

RX 480 8GB>GTX 1060 6GB, in DX12/Vulkan titles

RX 480 8GB=GTX 1060 6GB, in 2016 titles

RX 480 8GB<GTX 1060 6GB, in 2015 and older titles (DX11)

RX 480 4GB>GTX 1060 3GB, in most games

Mostly due to its extra 2GBs of vRAM and better DX12 implementation, but "AMD's patended Finewine technologies" works too xD

Yeah, I know :P

Considering that I can hit 3.8GB vRAM usage on medium/high settings in a title that's considered as an "esport" title (R6S, I get 120-150FPS at my settings...), you know 3GB cards even for 1080p shouldn't exist...

On a side note, we both have "medium" end GPUs with our 5820Ks...some people are triggered...

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Well GTA V uses at least 3.5GBs at 1080p, so yeeaahhhhh xD

After watching the whole video, Id still argue the 480 performs better than the 1060. They are equal but because of the 480s advantage in DX 12 it comes ahead in almost all of the later releases

@PCGuy_5960

RElive has been proven better by several reviews.

480 is now faster on average according to Hardware Canucks.

Crossfire with rx 480 is as good as crossfire gets atm. It is generally no worse than any other solution. Claiming it is without proof is just going to paint you as biased.

NVIDIA fastsync is reported to increase latency and mess up frame timing atm. Probably just a driver issue

Im on mobile phone so I can't get the links

In that case add Zerocore for amd.

It shuts down the unused gpu under crossfire to save power.  It works.

Sli constantly use 10-20w idle vs Crossfire due to Nvidia not being able to shut down their core completely
