A dead operating system that should stay dead.

Want to know which mobo to get?

Spoiler

Choose whatever you need. Any more, you're wasting your money. Any less, and you don't get the features you need.

Only you know what you need to do with your computer, so nobody's really qualified to answer this question except for you.

it's oracle's server OS. oracle are the 'patent troll fuckheads' of the PC industry. they buy technology and kill it.

The issue with Oracle is that they only care about short term profit and ignore the long term.

I really thought AIX would die second (HP-UX was first of the 'big-three').   Seems i was wrong - AIX is the last in the class ...

And the other good thing they had....was OpenOffice. Which had the best people leave and create LibreOffice.

Oh wow didn't think Solaris would actually die though, Oracle normally doesn't care and just does whatever they want. That and there oh so friendly licensing audits.

Solaris isn't dying, sensationalist title, and misleading post. What's actually happening:

Quote

In a new post, the company says “Oracle Solaris is moving to a continuous delivery model using more frequent updates to deliver the latest features faster, while fully preserving customer and ISV qualification investment in the vast array of ISV applications available on Oracle Solaris 11 today.”

“New features and functionality will be delivered in Oracle Solaris through dot releases instead of more disruptive major releases, consistent with trends seen throughout the industry. This addresses customer requirements for an agile and smooth transition path between versions, while providing ongoing innovation with assured investment protection. By moving to a continuous delivery model based on Oracle Solaris 11, customers will have a seamless update experience to better fit their move to agile deployment models.”

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/01/24/solaris_continuous_delivery_plan/

If you look at the roadmap provided in the OP, it clearly shows Solaris 11.next

sparc-solaris-roadmap-jan-17.png

They're moving to more incremental and frequent updates and also looking for SaaS/cloud integration. While Solaris 12 may have been canned for now, Solaris isn't dying, Oracle is just moving in a different direction.

Java REALLY needs to go away. It's a lot like cars, most of us need one or will use one but cars are constantly killing us. Both can easily be fixed but there is a lot of legacy tie-ins and push back on change.

Or maybe Java is like Skynet. It's everywhere and controls tons of things, if it turned evil we would be screwed.

I came here to pay respects and saw everyone loving this... So confused right now :/:(

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

I think they're going to focus on the cloud service stuff I know they're pushing their customers to upgrade their ERPs to cloud based stuff. Unfortunately for them it doesn't seems to be any more responsive or less prone to slowdowns.

That's because IBM actually gives a damn about keeping it up to date with Linux.

Can Google just buy Oracle, guy the management, and make everything Oracle controls tolerable at least?

I just wish Java had proper thread interfaces. The fact Thread.isAlive() returns false if it's just asleep/waiting to finish is ridiculous. The overhead and serialisation caused by Thread.join() is infuriating.
