iOS Cracking tools used by FBI leaked by hacker

Remember that whole thing with the FBI trying to get Apple to unlock an iPhone involved in a case, or at least give them a tool to do it with? When Apple refused (good on you, Apple), the FBI turned to a firm known as Cellebrite, paying them to make a tool to unlock the iPhone for them. Cellebrite obliged and developed a tool to bypass iOS security and unlock the phone. Great, the FBI can continue in their pursuit of justice. However, the tool that Cellebrite created didn't stay hidden for very long, as a hacker has gained access to the tool and made it public. 

 

That's not all though, the hacker also gained access to 900GB of Cellebrite's data, discovering that they also have tools to crack the security of Android and BlackBerry devices. The hacker responsible for obtaining the data has kindly not released the tools for cracking newer devices, but they have definitely made their message clear; once a backdoor or a tool for bypassing security exists, it will eventually find its way out to the public. 

 

The reason Apple refused to give in to the FBI's demands of building in a backdoor to the iOS software was to prevent security holes from being formed and exploited. What this hacker has done has clearly demonstrated that having cracking tools and security backdoors is a big threat to security, both for the company making the software and to its users. Luckily, the data was taken by what appears to be an ethical hacker, as they have not released any tools or data that can be used to crack current software, but I would not be surprised if they have given the tools they gathered to the respective developer to help them patch holes in their security. 

 

Now, this is a data breach on a company that works to bypass security, so they obviously know what they are doing, yet their data was still compromised, despite their expertise. Hopefully this brings the attention back to the storing of user's data, enforced by law by the likes of the UK and Canada. If a firm dedicated to security can't protect their own data, how likely is it that all the ISPs (in-particular the small, independent ones) are going to be able to protect millions of users' personal information.

I am interested if they can crack Sailfish OS as easy as android and iOS.

I wonder if Apple would be charged with a federal offense if they patched the security holes in iOS. Something like "HALTING THE PROGRESS OF JUSTICE" or some other bullshit.

We'd have the same arguments as last year except now the Federal Bureau of Incompetence doesn't stand any ground whatsoever. Just like they did last time, but now with actual proof of the tools used to hack were hacked proving that you can't keep this shit safe at all.

This is why you don't put computers that contain sensitive info on a network or the internet, if you have to have physical access to the device hacking it become essentially impossible without confrontation and capture

This is why you don't ask for back doors (or other things like it) in the first place.

 

The FBI allegedly got what they wanted. Now they get to reap the benefits that comes with it.

Yes you can. For media companies the bulk of sales happen in the first couple months. The DRM only has to work that long, and they know that.

I think Apple should add an option in the settings to enable Full-Disk Encryption (iOS currently only has file level encryption) or bring macOS's Filevault feature to iOS. 

 

 

Speaking of security, iOS at the moment still doesn't support the most secure VPN protocol which is OpenVPN.

That's up for debate. Everyone could pirate The Witcher 3 if they wanted, but they didn't. Instead it sold like crazy.

File level encryption is better.

The biggest problem with FDE for phones is that people don't shut their phones off all the time. They lock them. With FDE, all your data is either encrypted or decrypted. With FDE, as soon as you have typed in your password once, the key is saved in RAM until you turn your phone off again.

It has to work this way with FDE, because otherwise you wouldn't be able to lock your phone, since the files required to use the lock screen has to be decrypted, and those files are decrypted the exact same way everything else on your phone is decrypted.

So as long as your FDE phone is booted, everything is decrypted and up for grabs.

 

With file-based encryption, each file has their own unique key. So when you lock your phone, the keys needed to decrypt things like your photos can be expunged from the RAM, while the keys necessary for the files running the lockscreen can still be loaded. That way, your personal files are safe even when your phone is locked.

Except that is not true. Otherwise charities which relies on donations would not work. The Witcher 3 would have flopped. For crying out loud parents make choices that benefits their child over themselves all the time.

And you might say "yes but like that article says people only help others because it makes themselves feel better", but that does not take away from the argument that I am making against your point. Even if all games were DRM-free, people would still buy games. Either because it makes them feel good for doing "the right thing", or because they would refuse it because of their morals, or for whatever other reason they might have. The point is that it would still happen.

What @LAwLz said, and don't forget not doing that all the time is a direct consequence from the choice to live in society. That's this principle of giving up some freedoms to be a member of society is not new, it has been theroricized by Rousseau and Hobbs centuries ago, and it is in the best interest of men to work with others for their survival for instance.

In the case of games, we end up un Kant's morality theory, where you will pay for a game not because you want to, but because you want other to pay for your work, so you have to work for theirs. Because reciprocity is the basis of not raping each other off everything we have!

In addition to that, there have been research papers about the way our brain is functioning which is a direct consequence of a natural selection approach based partly on the capacity to collaborate. I need to search it again to find it if you want.

Probabilistic model says no. Many charities do fail, and some game launches have failed completely because of piracy.

 

The Helper's High is like any high, be it athletic, intellectual, or chemical, in that some people experience it and some don't. 

 

All people are assholes. The only variables are how much and when.

 

And many people pre-order because they have to have it Day 1. If a pirated version was available day 1 and everyone knew about it, most would choose to pirate it.
