[H] delided a Kaby Lake i7 7700K, the results are .. interesting

source: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/01/19/intel_kaby_lake_i77700k_cpu_delid_relid_results

I saw PCPer's podcast this morning and there was a topic in there that showed something interesting

what happens if you delid a 7700K and replace the TIM that Intel put there with some Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra

well ...

Quote

1484857165b9Q0qmS6fl_1_6.png

Replacing our Kaby Lake TIM resulted in a 25.28% decrease in package temperature under a full load for an hour. I am using a Koolance triple radiator and model 360 Koolance water block.

they got a 23 deg C decrease in package temp, that's huge!

and it appears that it's not because of the TIM, but the distance between the IHS and the silicon die - this was pointed out in some other Anand discussions

---

one other thing PCPer pointed out is that Intel's people said that the TIM needs replacement anyways

I suspect this won't be a problem for people who don't OC their chips to the limits nor for the people who buy regular non K CPUs, at least not for couple of years

the TIM will crack eventually and will need replacement  that's a huge deal

Mine was hitting 100C in stress tests while everything was stock. I undervolted my chip just to cool it down.

wow. Kaby lake is...useless.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

My 4790K is getting a delid and then some MX4. Because with 8 years guaranteed and near liquid metal performance without electrical conductivity....

Although, only because of Intel insisting on having a ridiculous gap between the IHS and die. My old S370 Celerons don't have this problem for crying out loud.

Now I really wanna delid my 6700k, but I'm scared on whether I can do it right, what to apply instead of the stock TIM. I've seen many easy delidding toolkits along with new TIM in the US, but I live in India :/

If your temps are already cool with the 6700k i see no reason to do it...it's not that massive of a improvement as compared to the 7700k + you could ruin your chip, and you might not be able to just send a email to Intel saying "Hey can i get one for free" like linus can

( ಥـْـِـِـِـْಥ) what!?  Please for the love of god... *facepalm* someone needs to explain to them that's not how temperatures work.  For example, 40 C is not "twice as hot" as 20 C since 0 in whatever scale you're using, unless it's absolute is just some arbitrary value with no meaning in this context.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

im going to delid my 3570k and see if i can get better temps with it at 5ghz (which it is 72hr prime 95, and unigine stable), but only after i get my new system built.

Nothing to see here, move along

Anyone serious about overclocking will delid their chips, buy a special bracket/socket arm that screws in place that doesn't need an IHS to apply the mounting pressure and mount a cooler to the bare die, it's very common for LN2 overclockers.

Yours faithfully

You're getting it all wrong, the Powercolor R9 295x2 air cooled edition with an FX9590 is what you need. AMD does solder all their IHS' to their chips, so why doesn't Intel do that?

Why in the world is this "interesting"? This has been common for a very long time now, and is nothing new. They are not telling us anything we didn't already know, and plenty of us have been preaching these results on this very forum for a long time now. Even after Linus released that terrible delidding video of his, we were still saying this. I even had a thread about it:

My results? The exact same as PCper's. 22C difference on my 6700k.

Yes, the glue they use is the biggest culprit for the drastic change in heat. It's also why you see large variances in per-core temps (one core being 8C+ hotter than another under uniform load) because the glue's thickness isn't perfectly uniform around the perimeter of the IHS.

MY BAD, totally forgot about those, but can you crossfire 2 of those? If Trump goes mad i'll just buy whats left of the 295x2 and make my own country :P

Thermal shock, tldr the die is too small for the heat to dissipate when they solder it, so it will kill chips

Nobody uses those non IHS things for LN2, everyone always puts the IHS back on, too much risk for shorting + crushing die without the IHS.

Would be nice if, you know, a BILLION DOLLAR COMPANY WITH A MONOPOLY ON CPUS, does things right out of the factory regarding temps.

With Intel's budget, there really is no excuse for users to have to delid their CPUs for lower temps.
