SATA to USB adapters (they all suck?)

xGGAx

ok this is more a rant than anything so bear with me.

Yesterday I bought some cheapo IDE/SATA to USB adapter. I thought I could use one of those since I work at  tech support and stuff.

Well, the thing did not work with my old 2.5" SATA1 80GB hdd(my disk boots fine when plugged directly to a sata port), it seems like doesn't give enough power to the drive. I was like, well, maybe I got a bad one.

I went back to the store where I bought it and they couldn't get it to work (at first), but then it was fine. After arguing with the manager I decided to take it home. I bought a second adapter just in case the first one decided not to work again.

Second adapter did not work at all. Led light turns on but no disk activity. At this point I'm like FML, so I decided to take both things to the shop at work.

I tried 5 different SATA drives(two 3.5" and three 2.5") + 1 IDE drive. First adapter read all drives with some difficulties except the IDE drive. Second adapter only worked with one SATA3 drive.

I'm a bit lost about this. SATA drives are meant to be forward and backward compatible, right? and I realize that those adapters are not the best quality but still. Is there anything else I can try before throwing them away?

the drives were properly formatted, initialized and they all had files in them. I made sure they were fine using one of these . They show up almost instantly using that dock.

I forgot to mention that. I tried them on 3 different PCs. The first one had win XP, second one Win7 x64 and third one Win10 x64. Even tried one drive on  Debian8 x64.
