BEWARE Buying Seagate 2TB 7200.14 ST2000DM001 Drives!

sotiris.bos

It happened to me and I just wanted to warn the rest of you who want to buy a 7200.14 drive Model ST2000DM001. It comes in two variations, one with a 1TB/Platter density (2 Platters, as normaly advertised) and one with a 666GB/Platter density (3 Platters). I bought it online and got the 3 platter one which was really noisy, somewhat slow and made my whole desk vibrate (no kidding). I sent it back, got my money back and picked up one at a local store after visual inspection (the only way you can tell them apart besides checking the serial numbers). The retailer I visited had no idea about this and unintentionally tried to sell me the 3 platter version at first but I personally chose the 2 platter version from the 4 drives he had in the store and informed him about the situation. Check the link below if you are further interested about the 2 different versions:

http://www.techenclave.com/community/threads/confusion-with-seagate-7200-14-platter-sizes.138435/

EDIT: This thread is neither intended to discourage anyone from buying this drive, nor to rant about it or start a fanboy argument. It is known that the above can happen, you can check the links posted in this thread below by me or others. My aim is not to upset anyone or refer you to buy another drive, I just bought the drive because of the good reviews and the 1TB per platter feature and didn't get what I paid for at first. I currently have the 1TB/platter version and I am very pleased with it as it is fast, silent and no vibrations are noticeable by me. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

Why do i always get blue screens? Why not a red one for a change?

Uh, yes it is true and I almost blew 100 euros because Seagate wants to make more money...

Increasing storage density of a medium almost always improves the transfer speed at which that medium can operate. This is most obvious when considering various disk-based media, where the storage elements are spread over the surface of the disk and must be physically rotated under the "head" in order to be read or written. Higher density means more data moves under the head for any given mechanical movement.

Not surprised at all. "Seagate". Throw it into the sea.

I had never bought a Seagate drive before. I have a 5 year old WD Green 1TB that still works like a charm but it was too small for me. The 1TB/Platter version works nicely and fast though, I really like it.

Reading the reviews the looks like the  7200.14 model is the more reliable and the 7200.12 is the less reliable one.

I have that exact drive, Had it in for a few months now and it has been quiet and very reliable. Speed is not an issue, in fact I load all of my games from it as my c: is a 120GB SSD.

Wikipedia is your reliable source?

I have the same model HDD. It's silent and is more than fast enough.

I think the one you recieved was probably just broken.

Please don't go posting crap like this: "Don't buy product x because I bought it and got a broken one."

You were unlucky, it's not the manufacturers fault. They didn't make it like that on purpose.

Thanks

I just quoted that wikipedia article to contradict the guy saying that 3 platters with less density is faster than 2 platters with more density...

It wasn't broken, I checked it thouroughly, it is just that the 3 platter version of this drive is potentially a bad product and Seagate intentionally introduced it to the market.

I never discouraged anyone from buying a Seagate drive, I just wanted to warn people that they might not get what they paid for... You don't have to be offensive.

It's well known from the amazon reviews of these drives that many drives have problems, so I don't think it is an isolated case. It's no reason to change hard drive brands because of a single bad drive, but there are quite a few cases of people having problems, much more than most other drives, and it is something you can watch out for just to be safe.

Are you sure that it is not just the computer powering off your drives after an "x" amount of time? You might want to check that in the power options.

Why do i always get blue screens? Why not a red one for a change?

I wouldn't imagine so as would be exploring different folders so I doubt it's turning on and off every second might as well have a look all the same thanks

Well, I was just pointing it out that they own them too, which is kinda weird since new WD's are good, but the new Seagate's... Not so much...
