HDMI Blu-Ray player connect to PC?

QuantumBit

Hello!

I was wondering if I connect a Blu Ray player (like this one) would it work with my PC? I know it probably does but I want to make sure.

In what sense? As a DVD drive purely, or are you trying to output to your monitor? If you meant the latter then you would need two video inputs on your monitor (not related to your PC).

Both.

I was planning to use it for my TV, but I was wondering if I could use it to rip dvd's.

NO, you cannot connect a standalone player to a PC using an HDMI and use it as a disc drive for the computer, the MOST you could do is get a capture card that supports any standards used to prevent copying to bring the video into the PC then do a "real time" recording (which would take the length of the movie) and thats if the copy protection didn't block you, BUY A Bluray drive meant for PC use.

Short answer: No

Long answer: It depends

1. That player is a "set top box", meaning it only has an HDMI output, and is designed to be plugged into a TV

2. You can plug it into any display that has an HDMI port. This includes TV's, monitors, etc. If your monitor has enough inputs to plug in this Blu-Ray player over HDMI, AND plug your PC in over a second HDMI port (or a different port all together, such as DisplayPort, DVI, or VGA), then you can connect both your PC and the player to your monitor

3. If you connect the player to your monitor in the method described in point #2 above, you will have to switch inputs on the monitor to go back and forth between the PC and the player.

4. You can connect the player to a PC for the purposes of recording (note: Not the same thing as ripping) a blu-ray movie, in real time, assuming you also have an HDMI Capture Card installed (And it has the necessary features to strip out the HDCP encryption).

5. You cannot "rip" the movie file itself (The movie file being the actual digital video file(s) on the disc). You'd be capturing the HDMI input, and encoding a brand new file. This means you can only record in real time (what you see is what you get), and on top of that, you will have quality loss of some kind.

If you want to rip Blu-Rays, you need something like this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136250

A SATA based Blu-Ray optical drive. This will allow you to read the movie disc. If you have playback software installed (PowerDVD, etc), you can watch the movie as you would on a TV (Note, VLC works with some Blu-Rays, but it's pretty shit compared to proper Blu-Ray playback software).

You can also rip the movie using a program called MakeMKV, which will extract the movie itself, strip off the encryption, and dump the movie as an MKV file. The movie will be uncompressed though, so file sizes can be anywhere  from 20GB to 40GB, give or take (Most are around 30GB in my experience).

To shrink the file, you can use an encoding program like Handbrake.

There are lots of guides online that show the full process, start to finish.

For Sale: Meraki Bundle

Thanks this really helped!

So if my case doesnt have a place to put the sata DVD, theres no way I could do it? (Unless I take off the side panel and hold it?)

What case are we talking about? You could use longer cables and just set the Blu-Ray drive on the top of your case, or on the table. In either case, I would place a rubber mat, or a piece of cardboard or something (a book, etc) to cushion the drive while it's spinning. Don't use anything super plasticy though.

Alternatively, you could use a USB 3.0 SATA 5.25" Enclosure box, like this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827993013

These plug into the wall, and connect to the computer over USB 3.0. You install the Blu-Ray drive inside it.
