How to OC my laptop RAM?

Hello,

Is it possible to push the RAM on my Alienware 15 R2?  I've already unlocked the GPU(GTX 965m) and OC'd it with over 135 Mhz and the VRAM on a 500+ MHz boost.  The reason I ask this, is because in the bios I'm able to push the voltage to 1.65 but I can't change the speed for some odd reason(I say odd because I don't see a reason to overvolt it if I can't change the clock speed).  Is there a way to unlock it? If so, please give suggestions.  Thank you!

Note: it's DDR4

chances are your either missing it or you would need a modded bios to do it which is pretty dangerous my friend bricked his laptop trying to mod his and we are currently trying to unbrick it(is is a pain in the ass)

Fair enough.  The OC on the GPU doesn't eat up too much battery, but I gotta say effects stack.  Thank you for the advice.  Although, the GPU wasn't totally insignificant, I was running DOOM on Ultra with a choppy 30-40 FPS w/out the oc but  with it I ran 60-75 ultra 1080p.  It's not amazing, but it certainly looks worlds better.

Not missing it, of that I'm certain.  It won't let me change the clock speed where it is located in the BIOS.

that is specific to each bios but I would think it would be near the overvolt

overclocking a GPU almost always provides significant gains.

Overclocking RAM on the other hand, not so much. It just adds another point of failure to the system

Good point. I guess it's just me being greedy, an OC on that GPU is great for mobile use but when I hook up my Ext. GPU it's not needed. Thanks for the advice.

Since the "AW" model line (I.E. post-M17x, M18x, etc) the BIOS has been secure-flash locked. You cannot flash a BIOS. Period. You can flash something to an empty BIOS chip and replace the existing BIOS chip, but good luck with that.

If you don't have the ability to adjust your timings, then you can't do it. You might have success using Intel XTU to change the timings, but I can't guarantee that it'll even let you fiddle with your timings.

Don't listen to them. Good RAM makes a big difference. It raises minimum framerates, and flat out can reduce CPU loads in games. It's even better in some cases to get better RAM than to overclock, as you will see in the link higher up in this post.

Almost everybody knows jack shit when talking about RAM but they're quite ready to speak as if they do.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

And? RAM benefits you straight. You can get 3000MHz RAM for laptops. You're telling this person that better RAM speed than the almost certainly 2133MHz 15-15-15-35 shit RAM that laptops come with by default is pointless, and that attempting to OC it grants no benefit but many downsides.

This is false.

He will see benefits from faster/tuned RAM; he's simply unable to actually overclock it with his system.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Best way is just to get better ram. We honestly need someone to test someone to test 3000mhz and 3200mhz ram on an AW system. As far as I know only 2667 works, and you need to get the Kingston HyperX ones (which I believe have some instability issues), or the 2400 Kingston ones (no issues and lowest timings in the business).

They didn't do a very good job of flash locking it then. I flashed my BIOS, that's how I OC'd the GPU.

1 - If you flashed your sBIOS then you're actually capable of digitally signing your BIOS... which I know you are not.

2 - You don't need a BIOS update to overclock a GPU

3 - vBIOS flashing has nothing to do with system BIOS flashing, and is the only thing that affects GPU overclocking

4 - LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL no.

I don't think you entirely understand what you're talking about.  Allow me to explain in simplistic terms,

before BIOS flash: GPU could not overclock :(

After BIOS flash: GPU could overclock :)

GPU clock speed was locked and I could not edit it WHATSOEVER.  I could not flash it myself after a few tries, and I found someone who put together a neat little .batch file.  Dell has the BIOS locked apparently but I could not find any official information regarding that.  Again, before the flash GPU speeds were locked and after the flash they were unlocked.

I know, for a FACT, you don't know what I'm talking about.

Let me explain in more simplistic terms.

sBIOS = system BIOS = flash locked.

vBIOS = video BIOS = not flash locked = what you flashed

stock vBIOS = +135MHz core overclock limit, +25mV overvoltage limit for Maxwell video cards. You could have (badly) overclocked from the get-go, unless you had some form of non-standard stock vBIOS in the first place, in which case that was grounds for return for RMA.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

do you still have this batch file ? can you post here ? and how it is going with the OCs ? did it degrade with time ?
