Samsung plans to prevent future phones from catching fire by adding additional safety checks

Samsung is bringing new level of battery safety checks to ensure that future samsung products, yes all Samsung products which use a lithium ion battery wont succumb to the fate the Galaxy Note 7 faced

Samsung’s new safety checks includes:

 

  1. Durability testing
  2. Visual inspection
  3. X-rays checks
  4. Charge and discharge tests
  5. Tests of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC)
  6. Disassembling tests
  7. Accelerated usage tests
  8. Open circuit voltage tests

Samsung investigated the issue & released a report recently which involved 700 dedicated staff testing 200,000 phones and 30,000 additional batteries, the problem was also investigated by the three outside firms it brought in

After months of investigating, Samsung is pinning all the blame on two separate battery flaws

Basically , bad batteries & rushed manufacturing process cause the quality to doom while pumping out , hopefully they've learned their lesson & they're pushing out the 2017 version of flagship galaxy phones in a few months, good luck with that Samsung!

i dont think that has any significance from a manufacturing perspective, their only focus is to make/meet sales target, they just like any other companies need a striking reason for consumer to buy a new phone from the same company, something has to change or something new to to it, that makes it 'new' , just to keep the 'selling cycle' fresh

Can some company just release something with a decent Snapdragon processor, 4-8GB RAM, 64G storage, a fucking huge battery and a decent design that isn't the OnePlus 3T?

As far as I'm concerned, some of this sounds pretty standard to me. Like visual inspection is now part of the process? It should've been there from the beginning.

it has been , the sites quoted that samsung says it has "raised its internal standards for the visual inspection" phase from the previous standard procedure , maybe they add more time to make sure there's no deformity or there's a strict stringent standard for the dimensional from now on ,

I'm still not impressed. This should've been in place from the beginning. It's a step in the right direction, but it's a step that should've been taken long ago.

regardless of how stupid the quick push for profits was , i think in a way its good, these kinds of accidents set a new standard when pushing the limits

And this is my problem. Greed drove Samsung to not do the proper thing, and it bit them in the butt, kind of like Warner Brothers with Batman Arkham Knight on PC. While I work in a completely different industry than Samsung in this particular area(military and defense for me), the company I work for has people inspecting everything that comes in through the door to ensure no damage or missing components - now, it's at a sample size, but they're still looking at things coming into the building.

I am surprised at the corner cutting in the battery quality checking. I think the phone was retailing in NZ for around $1700 which a lot of money. Makes me worried about my S7 and how long it will last until its battery expands and explodes

 

is anyone in NZ extremely disappointed in how the 6 o'clock news on tv3 covered this? they sent their dumbest reporter to cover it and they came back with utter nonsense.

Either make the batteries better so they don't expand or add a couple mm to the enclosure so its a non issue

 

(though the fact they didn't test phones prior is pretty amusing to say the least so QC testing is a ok start I guess)

Samsung did do inspection. Some of the things listed are not new but will be enhanced or more thorough including visual inspection.

I guess you could simply make the housing of the battery bigger but that would make the phone thicker, which is apparently more important than it not catching fire.

They could find ways to limit how hot the batteries get, which would limit the swelling, though I was leaning more towards the second option due to it being easier and more reliable of a solution.
