Replace i5 4590 with i7 4770k?

So, basically, the title:

I have an i5 on my z97 pc mate motherboard and lately, I have been struggling to keep stable 60 fps on battlefield one.

I think the CPU is to blame: The graphics card is a GTX 970 and I see the CPU at very high usage while playing.

Sometimes, every some seconds, I notice a very brief stutter: Very small, and the game experience is still good at high 50's on an ultrawide monitor at 1080p, but I was wondering if shifting to a 4770k model would be worth it.

I came across a second hand offer: The 4770k, first hand, where I live is 400 euro on amazon. This guy sells it for 250 with the original fan (not plannin OC'ing just yet) and I calculate I can sell my 4590 for 150 more or less....

I think at some point, I will have to upgrade my CPU but, what do you guys think? Is this a good deal? Should I go for another different CPU, perhaps? Is the GPU to blame for the frame drops?

Thanks!

EDIT: The change has been made!!!

I performed a couple benchmarks a day before the change, this were the results:

i5 4590:

Userbenchmark: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/2651761

Passmark: http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V9/display.php?id=76071763650 (4808, of which, cpu scored: 7944)

i7 4779k (non OC'd):

Userbenchmark:  http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/2659768

Passmark:  http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V9/display.php?id=76136242262 (5264, of which, cpu scored: 10094)

You can make your conclusions :) - even though these tests must be interpreted with a grain of salt, I see a 20-ish per cent improvement on the CU score, now, I'll have to see how it performs on real life tasks.

This is a great opportunity for you to upgrade!

Yes, your CPU is the problem for your BF1 framerate, a 4770 will really help you out.

The i7 will help but one thing to keep in mind is BF1 likes 16gbs of ram. Is your system rocking that amount? If not, then your problems will likely remain even after the CPU update. However, this is just one game. Upgrading a computer for one game is never a good plan unless money is meaningless to you.

1080p gaming is typically CPU dependent.

I7-7700k@5.1ghz + 1080ti @ 2050mhz + 32gbs Ram + 2TB SSD = CSGO

i7-6700k@4.9ghz + 980ti @ 1501mhz + 16gbs Ram + 1 TB SSD = Backup

i7-3770k@4.8ghz + 680 4gb + 32gbs Ram + 500gb SSD = Retired/Office work

Or get a new mobo and cpu to help you out in the future like a z170 and a i7 6800k or i7 6700k

(maybe even a i7 7700 to save money for a mobo, then you could get a non oc board for less)

Try using the PSU Tier List!

My current rig:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x

Ram: 1x16gb DDR4, 2x8gb DDR4

Storage: 1tb nvme ssd

GPU: gtx 3080

Monitor: 23.8" Dell S2417DG 144hz g-sync 1440p + 27" Acer S271HL 60 Hz 1080p

Keyboard: ducky one I | I SF

Mouse: gpro wireless | glorious model o2 wireless

And that reason for that is because of higher fps not because of the resolution it self.

Disregard the above. Haswell and Skylake are not far enough apart to warrant the new mobo and RAM.

CPU is the problem, I was running my usual chrome setup with around 100 tabs, and I was getting like 40fps, then I closed them and it hopped to 80-90 - Benched on an I5-6600k @Stock with a GTX 970 at 1670mhz, at mostly ultra settings.

Yes, I Have just upgraded from 8 to 16 Gb to see if the problem was there: Needed the upgrade anyway and made another 2nd hand deal, was very inexpensive (once I sell the old sticks): The game runs waaaay better now, I notice the ram usage is around 9Gb usually, so, yeah, that upgrade was needed.

Other games, like witcher, could show some stuttering from time to time as well: I also play elite dangerous... and had to crank down the settings a bit as well...

About buying a new cpu and mobo... it's out of my price range: The ram upgrade plus the 2nd hand 4770k could cost me, once I sell the old parts, a total of 200 euro: Upgrading mobo+cpu+ram would be waaaay more expensive: This will be the next upgrade, in a year or 1.5 year more or less. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Holy molly is it really that expensive for a 4770k in europe? Id recommend hopping on the new CPU intel generation and possibly save with power savings...

Yup, it's that expensive... jumping to the next gen would mean a lot more of investment :(

I wouldn't suggest getting new gen one

its like 5% difference and in some tasks 4th gen is better

for a lot higher price :D

Xeon E3-1240? No overclock nor iGPU, but i7 capability with a much lower price.

The E3-1240 is an LGA-1155 Xeon, and won't be compatible with that motherboard. The Xeon E3 1231 v3 is a good suggestion, though.. the OP had a locked CPU before and didn't say anything about overclocking the 4770K, so the 4770, 4790, or aforementioned Xeon might be a good alternative.

That Xeon naming scheme is quite arcane.

I only have 8GB of Memory,...I also set Windows pagefile to a manually set 16GB Max, not 8GB (Reason.Blackops 3 stuttered less, BF1 uses more @ 16 than @8 too I noticed) I think MY personal saving grace is using 2400Mhz DDR3 with my i5 4690. While I absolutely have a 95-100% CPU load, mostly the latter,....I dont stutter, have read/seen/experienced it on other machines, but I don't have that and I'm grateful, the Beta on this PC ran better than the Launch, the updates have helped somewhat however.

The overall consensus more and more widespread that BF1 loved more cores and threads than we typically see in other games in the same genre.

I have a GTX970 @ 1501Mhz when playing, 95-99% GPU Usage is typical (1080p Ultra) 70-90FPS is also typical.

(Nvidia Maximum Prerendered Frames) on Auto = 65-80% GPU Usage where'as forced to "1" gives full GPU usage.

So of course, if it worked for me, I share that tidbit when I can.

I have the same quandry...

i7 4770K/4790K - due to I play BF1 every day, and forsee I will for a while, plus recording boosts (every few days) and whatnot overall system balance seems its a perfect idea to do so...

Or.. Wait/Save>Sell and Re-Platform?

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Ok, So I finally went with it and got the 4770k, I think it's a great deal.

At least where I live (spain) the prices are way more expensive than in the us, for what you tell me, guys.

This is what I did:

2nd hand 2x8Gb DDR3 Kingston HyperX Fury: 60€ (1st hand on amazon, around 130): Sell my current 2x4Gb for 40, so, the RAM upgrade will be some 20 euro.

2nd hand i7 4770k for 250€ (heatsink and shipment included): (1st hand on amazon, around 380): Sell my current i5 4590 for 150: The cpu upgrade will be 100€

1st hand upgrade: 380 + 130 = 510€

2nd hand upgrade: 250 + 60 = 310€: Sell the old parts for 190: Final investment: 120€

I'm quite happy with the deal, and will have near-up to date hw for another year or two :)

Can you plz tag me or make a thread with your experiences/results?

I think it would shed light to many 4th gen i5 users.

^Pretty much this, Many i5 (4th Gen locked i5's) would be considering either a 4770/4790K before a 6th/7th Gen i7, I'm keen for your results.

Oh, ok... I'll try games and see the difference, then share the results. Any particular test? I mean, I'll still have the 4590 for a couple of days, I can run benchmarks or whatever can tell the difference better than a subjective opinion.

Get a 4790K.  You might as well get the best if you're going to spend that much.

I'm getting 2nd hand.. so I depend on what's on the market (pretty small second hand market over here) and I'm way over my budget already :(
