NVMe support for MSI gaming 5

WolfLw

Hi.

I currently have an MSI gaming 5 motherboard and i'm thinking about getting an Samsung 960 evo NVMe m.2 drive to use in it, but i'm not sure if the motherboard does support it, and to what extend it has support.

One of my biggest worries is that the gaming 5 won't be able to get up to full speed with the NVMe SSD. But as i can see it, it's not going to be able to use the NVMe, but it does support sata 6Gb, but then my question becomes will i even be able to use the m.2 NVMe SSD in my motherboard, just at lower Sata 6Gb speeds?

*EDIT*

Oh, and please don't tell me it's a waste, and don't tell me it's not necesary, and don't tell me i should get another drive unless it's faster. I do things that i should not in any way do, and i will not even be close to using the full potential of.

I know it's not the best idea, but hey, why would you "need" 24 NVMe drives in a server set in raid, and then have speeds of 10GB/s.

the interface for the m.2 is "PCI-Express 3.0 x4". your MOBO can only handle "PCIE Gen2 x2 & SATA mode". i think in might work, but in sata mode. Don't quote me on that because i'm really unsure, so if i were you i wouldn't take the risk.

(i think you mean the msi z97 gaming 5, right?)

Yes i do mean z97, but the reason for me not writing it in the name is because there is only one MSI motherboard with the name "MSI gaming 5" and that is the z97. But some another MSI motherboard has a name "MSI gaming M5" which is a z170 board.

And thank you ;)

It will work, but the bandwidth will be limited to 2gb/s because it's a gen 2.0, instead of 4gb/s for gen 3.0. From some tests I did with my 950 pro in the past, It would top at 1.1gb/s read on a gen 2 slot

edit: Probably not even 2gb/s, since it will use only x2 lanes and those are around 500mb/s each. Still better than sata, but not sure if it's worth the money to you.

Well rip, then it's time to wait for intel's 10 nanometer cpu's to come out, so i can not waste my money on a new cpu.

So that is what i shall do, i will wait till 10 nanometer cpu's come out, then buy new motherboard, cpu and ram. And of cause buy the sdd when the time comes.

Or use my savings on a drivers licence ;)

Driving is awesome! :D

Well if you're not in a hurry and are considering a new build altogether, you better wait it out a little. Let's see what Ryzen is all about, perhaps it would be worth it to switch to AMD? Who knows. Even better, Intel might finally get some competition and actually offer a meaningful increase in performance....

I personally don't have high hopes for Ryzen, and i don't expect it to be any good, but i do hope that it will be good, and that i will compete very well against intel, just like i'm hoping AMD will begin competing against Nvidia. I just don't expect it with these new architectures.

Early testing looks promising

I'm not sure, but isn't the only testing we've seen from AMD them selves, the reason i say that i they are able to hand pick the testing to make it look the best it can, or they use some of the lower and worse benchmarks to better fight against intel, though who knows. But it's just something to consider.

Yeah but some reviewers that can't help fiddling with stuff *cough* Linus *cough* kind of established that there wasn't anything tricky going on at least in Intel's side. Architecturally really Ryzen looks exactly the same with Intel's offerings now. They even used Nvidia GPUs to make a point, lol.

Only time will tell.

LMAO i'm having a blast hearing about AMD VS intel now that is 2019 im hoping @WolfLw Would be like WTF AMD with their new Ryzen 2 and now 3 i think that coming out

Lmao they outperform intel ... with Treat ripper and Ryzen 7 2700X Vs i9 9900K ... Cause also the Cores of AMD Vs Intel.... :P

now intel is Behind the game

a lot of People are Choosing Ryzen Cause better clock speeds more Stability and somehow Better Performance than intel,

But i prefer Intel. ever since i got my i7 4790K i just loved it and it performs better than my old Build

umm but ill wait till Intel has outperform Amd :P

anyways

...... going back to the NVME ....

so u guys think its not Work upgrading ... cause of the Speed of Z97 Gaming 5 is not even worth getting an NVME for it ...

dammm

i guess ill wait or upgrade to AMD Maybe lmao

well actually both AMD and Intell perform really well.

even when u put I7 9700K vs the Ryzen 7 2700X Both perform really well Lmao

anyways Hope WolfLW either upgraded to ryzen or intel :P

ryzen has cores and performs really well also a lot cheaper ...
