Buy New SSD for Laptop or New Laptop?

Which would you do?

11 members have voted

  1. 1. SSD or save for newer Laptop?

    • SSD (investing more money into a not-so-good laptop)
    • Save for Newer Laptop (5-6months before I get it, and wont' need it as much by then).

Okay. I have posted about this before, but things have changed since then. So my laptop is an Asus X55C-DS31. The only thing I changed is that I added 2GB of RAM (6 total) and swapped out the 500GB HDD (it failed) with another Failing SSD (OCZ ARC240). The laptop still works, but the OS is pretty much trashed. Simple normal WIndows things don't work. I am just not sure this laptop is worth spending another $60-70 bucks on another 240GB SSD. (I am not getting a cheap HDD). It is pretty old, running on a 2nd Gen i3; It has a crappy 1366x768 (100ppi) screen (its really ugly). And it weighs 5.4lb and is quite large. I am not complaining about the speed, it is fast enough for what i do with it.

Now, I have 2 choices, save for a new laptop or buy a new SSD.

But if I save for a new laptop this is what that means:

I can't afford one and won't be able to buy one until 5 months minimum. By that time I not be in need of a laptop as much as I am now. Please tell me which you would do? Thanks so much!

Hi,

if you won't need a laptop in 6 months "as much", maybe buy an SSD that you can later put into your main rig.

Casual Research, school stuff. Like I said, the speeds are fine. I just don't want to put a HDD into it. If I did get a new one, it would be fast enough to play overwatch at low settings, but I am not sure I'll care by then.

I didn't have a good look at the laptop but I saw the basic spec and it's pretty low end. An SSD will signicantly speed up any laptop but why spend that kind of money when you would be better off with a faster laptop.

You said your SSD was dying. What does SMART status read for it and what does CrystalDiskHealth see for it? Would a simple reinstall of Windows fix all your problems?

better off with a faster laptop that will probably have a HDD in it... which will be significantly slower to use than what he has now.

The SSD he has in it is dying, otherwise it's a good laptop to him. I think he should spend the money on a new quality SSD and when he's ready to upgrade the laptop he can repurpose it.

It's complicated. Smart says its fine but I have performed 10-15 (maybe more) and it always breaks something in windows. (And it gets worse over time until Clean reinstall.

Why don't you just do a clean install of Windows and be done with it?

That wont cost you anything and you'll probably see a large amount of functionability restored to your system.

Persaonlly, I think you'd be fine with one of these: https://www.sandisk.com/home/ssd/ssd-plus  They're often times under $60 for a 240GB model.

***BUT***  Get what you're going to be happy with.  If you want a computer that is better than the one you have, you're going to spend $700+.  So you need to decide, do you want $600 in your pocket more or do you want a new computer?  If you need more help, let me know.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

You need to choose what is going to make you happy.  Like I said before, I'd start by just doing a clean install of Windows and going from there.  You'd be surprised what can come out of that.

Why would you buy a used notebook?  That makes no sense at all.  If you're computer isn't working well for you, then you'll spend $700+ to replace it with a computer that is noticeably better.

I don't think you are understanding. My custom PC is just fine and I love it. My laptop is a piece of trash. Where the hell am I going to get $700? I don't have a job because I am a minor... if I WERE to get a new laptop I'd get something like a Acer Swift 3, Asus Zenbook UX303/5 or a Lenovo Flex 3/4.
