Thoughts on installing Windows 10 on this older PC?

Luke

I have an older build i'm putting together (i5-760, LGA 1156, P55 Mobo) and i only have a Windows 10 key. I'm just curious what type of experience users here have had with Windows 10 on older machines? Is the potential there for BSOD's etc? The newest supported operating system for this motherboard is Windows 8.1.

There shouldn't be any problems. LGA1156 isn't THAT old stuff.

I'm running Win10 on two Core2 era systems thanks to the free upgrade from 7 previously. Stability is fine. They're not the fastest but it works ok. As always, getting a SSD for OS helps a lot compared to using a HD.

If you want to test it before committing, you can install Win10 without using the key. Install the correct version the key is for, but don't enter it when prompted. Make sure it all works fine, and you can find necessary drivers before entering the key to activate. Win10 comes with a lot of older hardware support built in. You might need some manual driver updates like network if not picked up, and GPU, but shouldn't be a major problem. If it turns out you need a driver but they don't provide one for 10, try the 8.1 ones.
