Best, Affordable, Long Term PC Build Help

ok well lets expand on this then, something that will do 4k in the future if not now.

You really can't make a budget pc that will do 4k acceptably, top of the line hardware is just at that point. Go with 1440p or 1080p and pump the graphics settings to max, that $995 build above should be great for that

Hello all,

I am a new member to the forum, but a long time LTT watcher. I was hoping to get some help. About 4 years ago I moved from a windows based environment to an apple environment. While I was younger and into gaming that is all I did. Well now I have some kids who are getting into gaming also, and I would like to back into it. Here is what I am hoping to get some help with:

I am looking to build a machine that will run all of the current games and be 4k relevant. I am looking to keep the price tag down as low as possible, I am also looking to keep the system relevant for as long as possible, I do not want to buy something this year and have it no longer be supported next. Any input would be great. This will be a a gaming machine and a homework machine.

Thanks in Advance

Sorry. I would love to be at 1k however will trade price for longevity. As far as a display I will also need a display an preiphs, however are not required to fit within the "budget" section of this.

4K relevant while keeping the price down is going to be hard, if you're on a budget I would go with 1080p, it still looks fine, even a few years down the line it will still be a viable budget option.

What is your budget then? And does 4K relevant mean CS:GO and League of Legends, or AAA games like The Witcher 3 and GTA V?

Just wondering, wouldn't it be better to get a machine able to push 144HZ on most games than 4k for gaming?

Depends, for CS:GO and COD than yeah 144 hz, most other games I'd rather have 4k.

Can't really do 4k gaming for that much, you could crossfire if you get a different motherboard, most AAA games are going to be medium settings 4k, you need a titan XP to run say, GTAV at 4k with Very High Graphical settings.

but there's a 4k 27" TN free-sync display here

the i3 6100 should be replaced by the Kaby Lake Overclocking i3 when that becomes available, should wait to buy if possible or just get an i5 6500, but the i3 will be fine for 60hz gaming

Not too different from what @deXxterlab97 brought up to the table, it should work like a decent guideline for a good 1k build.

Sure if you don't mind frame dips, depending on the game into the teens or I've even seen single digits. The 1080 and titan xp are the only ones I've seen that can run a single card without frame dips ruining the game

Or you can win the lottery and get a Quadro P6000 and play 4k Ultra 60fps xD
But for real 30ish fps isn't bad start if you want to test out 4k on the living room television for example, there are lots of games that can get very good 4k performance too for a starting experience such as Source 1 based games, would never advise 1070's with a 4k monitor though.

Not too different from what @deXxterlab97 brought up to the table, it should work like a decent guideline for a good 1k build.

These are the same price and 10000000 times better performing... Just they don't include a monitor

Right, but a 1070 can't really do 4k gaming either, the 480 lets you run games fine at 1080p which would scale fine on the 4k display, and you still get free-sync as well

G-sync 4k displays are still $800 if the part picker is correct

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Except the 1070 would last longer even if he plays on 1080p.

Not worth using only 60-70% of your GPU for a few years though, the 480 runs most AAA games over 60fps at high-ultra

Besides DX12/Vulkan should keep the 480 around for a long while for 1080p 60hz gaming
