Will a gtx 1080 or 2 1080s be bottlenecked with my 4.2 ghz 3770k?? and gtx 680 2gb for physX??!!

Dear Linus,

i've been watching and liking your youtube videos for years till now. they're great and useful. 4 years ago i built a PC with:-

intel core i7 3770k at 4.2ghz

antec kuhler 920

evga gtx 680 2gb

asus vs247 24 'inch 60hz

2 * 4 gb corsair vengeance

azrock z77 extreme 3

seasonic 850 watt bronze

cooler master haf x full tower

120 gb kingstone ssd

1 tb western digital hdd.

with nvidia 10 series gpus released i'm considering buying a 1080 or 2 to replace my gtx 680 and a 120hz monitor, i think it'll be much cheaper than buying a whole new build, but i'm wondering will a 1080 or 2 1080s unleash its or their full potential in my 4 years old build??!!

and please pardon this silly question, 3 years from now when nvidia makes the 13 series like gtx 1380 and gtx 1370, will that series be bottleknecked in my current build??!!

i tried searching your youtube channel and the forum about this matter but didn't find any videos or topics, i wished to find a benchmark test video, i always liked yours,

last thing when i buy a 1080 should i dedicate my 2gb 680 for physX or it will be too strong to be dedicated for physX??!!

thanks in advance.

Not enough to make it noticeable.

Would spend the money on a CPU/Mobo upgrade rather than on a second 1080 and there is no need for a dedicated physx card.

Also don't use your old GPU for PhysX as PhysX cards are useless nowadays. Most games don't support them, the games that do are going to get you only a few extra FPS and it is condidered outdated tech.

3770k should be fine, it'll hold it back a little compared to the latest/greatest but probably not worth the cash to upgrade yet.

You can try the 680 as physx, but I've tried my 980 as physx a few times and gotten about the same result as not having a physx card.

What games and res? Doubt it would handle 2 1080.

Unless the all i7's are the same then you should be good.

Yea, that's what he is saying.

Like others have mentioned, I would stick with one 1080, should be more than enough for any normal use. Put $100 of the saved cash into 16gb ram, and the final §500 into the screen, and you'll be settled.

Depends on the game. A single 1080 averages 120fps in 1440. So you will need two for 4k but I doubt the cpu will handle that.

that high cpu usages worry me. i think they mean the gpu or gpus could have unleashed more potential but was limited by the cpu. but i have seen some youtube benchmarking videos of battlefield one, the witcher 3, gta v with one 1080 and 3770k at 4.2 ghz where the cpu usage were 70% at most. what games were you running or was that a torture test??!!

You will likely see a bottleneck but I don't really think it would be that large. That being said I would strongly suggest reconsidering using a PhysX card since it will net a very minimal performance boost in the very few games that support it and even then you may see worse performance just because the 680 is so much slower than a 1080.

If you actually need two GTX 1080's in SLI, my assumption is that you are gaming at 4K or some insane resolution like 3x 1440p. In that case, CPU bottlenecks are probably not going to surface due to the overwhelming GPU workload. If you're gaming at 1080p with SLI 1080's, yeah, you're probably going to hit a CPU wall in lots of games, if for no other reason than your graphics configuration often being able to push out quintillions of frames per second at that resolution.

I think a GTX 680 for PhysX alongside a pair of GTX 1080's is a silly idea. PhysX is not so common or so meaningful as to justify an entire 195 Watt GPU dedicated to it, and the performance difference would be minimal or possibly negative. If SLI 1080's can't do it, you shouldn't be doing it.
