xfx rx 480 or gtx 1070?

Go to solution Solved by toasty6776,

If you really only play at 1080p, get the 480. That should serve you well for the next few years. The 1070 is a bit overkill for 1080p (speaking from experience). If you prefer Nvidia, get a 1060.

I am looking to play at 60+fps at 1080p. The hard part about choosing the card is doing the research which can give you a headache if you don't know which source is true, and which source is just biased for a specific platform. I am basically going to be playing Gta V, Fallout 4, and some future titles at 1080p. I want no compromises when it comes to any game at 1080p that is currently out, excluding ashes of the singularity and any crysis game. Please help, but please try to keep my wallet happy at the same time if you could. Thanks :)

if you just want 1080p 60fps no compromises, get a well cooled 480 8gb. the 1070 is overkill for that, and the rx480 will serve you better as time goes on with dx12 and vulkan support popping up more.

Wouldn't a 1070 last him a very long time at 1080p if it's overkill?  He can also upgrade to a higher resolution later on without upgrading.

of course it would. but so would a 1080 or a titan xp. but the 1070, I think most would agree, is the sweet spot for 1440p gaming. and if he wants to buy a new monitor in the near future for it then yes, but that wasn't in his original question, so I simply answered it :) even then, if he had an rx480 and chose to upgrade to 1440p later, he could crossfire a second card when he gets the new monitor and it would blow a 1070 out of the water at a $100 premium (even though it's a pain in the ass cuz crossfire support is going away).

Well right now RX 480 is enough for 1080p gaming.

But will it be enough for upcomming games in few years?

GTX 1070 is better than RX 480 based on performance and noone can say otherwise. So if you realy don't want any compromises, get GTX 1070 and you can run everything at max settings. Sure GTX 1070 is kinda overkill for 1080p right now, but it probbably won't be overkill for 1080p games after few years.

And maybe don't look at it like overkill, but more like future headrom power.

Just go 1070. Future proof. And also, Nvidia :D

Not a great value, though... Once the RX 480 needs to be upgraded, there will be cards in the same price tier to upgrade to, which will crush the 1070. Paying more for "future proofing" is never a good idea with PC components (especially GPUs).

Unless you have a 100+Hz monitor, or plan to get one/upgrade to 1440p in the near future the 480 is absolutely the more logical step. :)

You'll have to do that nonetheless. Just not as soon with the 1070. And the upgraded card is pretty much guaranteed to be more powerful than the 1070 (considering GPU releases of years past).

Yes, of course, but if you can carry on for on more gan, you'll end up saving more money than buying a RX480

Depends on your Monitor also; If you have a 60Hz monitor then all that Extra FPS from your card will be moot, as you will have to vsync or cap it somehow unless you want some screen tearing from the 1070. If you are running at 1080p you should be maxed on all games with that card, if you are running 1440, make sure you dont fall under a certain FPS unless you have gsync else you'll get that stuttering.
