Can we end the GTX 1060/RX 480 debate?

As someone who's buying either a GTX 1060 or an RX 480 over the holidays, I am coming to realize how difficult of a decision it is to pick between these two graphics cards. Both offer excellent price/performance and they both max out the latest AAA titles at 1080p.

 

However, nobody can agree on a single card. Today, I'm going to try and end that debate. I'll be pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of each card, and I will try to come to a concrete conclusion as to what GPU we should buy.

 

Let's start with the RX 480. The MSRP for this card is around $200 for the 4GB reference model, and $250 for the 8GB reference model. In DX12 and Vulkan, this thing is a beast. It beats the GTX 1060 nearly every time at both of these low-level APIs. It sports more VRAM than the GTX 1060, which only is offered in 3GB and 6GB flavors officially (there may be an AIB 1060 that has 8GB, I'm not sure). In a select few DX11 titles, the RX 480 wins out. These games are typically tailored specifically for AMD hardware (e.g. Battlefield, Hitman) and there aren't that many of them. However, the RX 480 consistently loses to the GTX 1060 in most DX11 titles. In some games, like Overwatch, this margin is a solid 10-20FPS advantage for the GTX 1060. It overclocks extremely poorly; many people have reported that their RX 480 cannot even sustain the base clock.

 

Now on to the GTX 1060; it's slightly more expensive, with a cost of $210 for the 3GB version and $260 for the 6GB model. It consumes less power than the RX 480, overclocks far better (with reports of +200MHz on reference coolers), and runs much cooler, so most aftermarket coolers for this card are fine. However, it beats the RX 480 consistently at DX11, where most games are situated now. It doesn't perform as well as the RX 480 in DX12, but driver updates could easily change the game. However, there is no SLI support and it doesn't have nearly as much VRAM, making the RX 480 a bit more future-proof.

 

In reality, it all depends on what you're looking for. If you run Windows 10 and have DX12 access, the RX 480 is a much more attractive option right now. However, if you don't plan on moving to Windows 10 anytime soon (like me), the GTX 1060 performs far better. Still, driver updates could put the GTX 1060 ahead.

 

TL;DR: Go for the RX 480 if you're running Windows 10/DX12 and you want your card to be more future-proof. If you're not planning on moving to Windows 10 and you'll still be running DX11 for a while, go for the GTX 1060.

Agreed, but I'm not using the card for VR, and I don't suspect most people are.

Just so this is made clear, DirectX 12 is not going to make that GPU last that long. That GPU will not ever get so much better that the people who bought it would never want to upgrade.

 

The 1060 from EVGA is worth the price in my opinion, just because I know if something were to get fucked up with my card, EVGA will take care of me. I won't have to talk to some Indian who can barely speak English (no offense) who will give me the run around.

There's nothing to debate here. If raw power is your pref, the RX 480 has a bit more oomph. If you still play some older titles/anything with OpenGL, you go with the GTX 1060.

Imagine if Asus, Intel e others jumped on the GPU market, then we'd have a true deal of indecision there hehehe, but really it hardly matters which one of the two you pick, I'd honestly say go for AMD if you already have an AMD processor, planning on having one and go nVidia if you use Intel processors, they pair better, directx really is something with such low difference right now that buy AMD because it got slightly superior on the first DX12 compatible titles seems a rush decision.

 

In the end it only matters preference really, people lose their sleep over gaining 2~5fps that they won't even realize in the real world performance, future-proof is true with any card you buy honestly I am using a GTX 560Ti temporarily while I save to finish my build with the GTX 1070 around February/March, and this card still works great enough in 1080p, GTA 4, AC 3, Dirt3, CS:GO/TF2/Portal2, Metro 2033, Hitman Absolution, Splinter Cell Conviction and many other still very fun games runs on maxed settings 1080p, so either of the 2, gtx1060 and rx480 will give you pretty much the same "future-proof" in the long run especially with the drivers maturing.

Actually, a few YouTubers have covered this. Here are a few videos about the RX 480 and GTX 1060 and how they stack up today. Apparently, the RX 480 has better driver support, and has reduced the 12% lead of the GTX 1060 to only 2% with the same testing suite, and completely removed its lead at 1440p. It's the better buy today, and will be the far better buy tomorrow.

 

 

 

Another YouTuber - actually a member on this forum; @ONOTech - has posted a more unique evaluation with a focus on the importance (or lack thereof) of average framerates. This is a different approach to the comparison, but a worthwhile and thorough one.

IMO.

 

What games, resolution and how much you value power efficiency or feature set should do the rest of the deciding. 

 

It's much like the 970 vs 390 argument.

I'm happy with my rx 480, when i got it i expected it to eventually beat the GTX 1060, but i actually didn't expect it to happen this soon.

I want to keep it for 5-6 years so i had to go AMD due to the fact they age better, anyway the longer i have it the happier i am with my decision.

I agree, but Nvidia hasn't always been pushed by AMD that far. For instance, compare the oldest AMD and NVidia cards that still have active, decent driver support. 

 

Then again, I could be wrong about this, but I've observed that NVidia has always antiquated older cards much faster than AMD.

AMD rebadged their architecture for years. Hawaii went up against the 700 and 900 series from Nvidia. Both have had hits and misses in the last few months. Saying Nvidia won't support their older cards is like saying Ryzen will fail because Bulldozer.
