“This is a truly amazing group of people,” the president-elect said on Wednesday in a 25th-floor conference room at Trump Tower in Manhattan. The gathering included Jeff Bezos of Amazon; Elon Musk of Tesla; Timothy D. Cook of Apple; Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook; Larry Page and Eric Schmidt of Alphabet, Google’s parent company; and Satya Nadella of Microsoft, among others. “I’m here to help you folks do well,” Mr. Trump said.

He kept going in that vein. “There’s nobody like you in the world,” he enthused. “In the world! There’s nobody like the people in this room.” Anything that the government “can do to help this go along,” he made clear, “we’re going to be there for you.”

And that was just in the first few minutes. The candidate who warned during the presidential campaign that Amazon was going to have antitrust problems, that Apple needed to build its iPhones in the United States instead of China, was nowhere to be seen.

 

I'm not particularly optimistic about this meeting's agenda. But hey, it's nice that "the Donald" can play nice.

Other tech chief executives also took the same route. Hours before Mr. Trump’s meeting with tech leaders, the president-elect announced that Mr. Musk and Travis Kalanick, Uber’s chief executive, would be among those joining his Strategic and Policy Forum, which is already stacked with businesspeople from finance and other industries. Ginni Rometty, the chief executive of IBM, had previously joined the forum.

More than values and policy are at stake in the relationship between the administration and the Valley. Money is, too.

In the wake of Mr. Trump’s victory, Forrester Research is cutting back its growth estimate for the United States tech market in 2017 to 4.3 percent from 5.1 percent.

One reason is simple caution, as large multinational manufacturers navigate a new and unpredictable administration.

Another reason: less tech spending by the government. “There are so many cabinet secretaries who are explicitly hostile to the mission of their agencies,” said Andrew Bartels, a Forrester principal analyst.

As for 2018, there are so many ways things could go that a forecast is impossible. “It’s up for grabs,” the analyst said.

So, too, is the relationship of Mr. Trump and the tech industry. For the moment, though, Silicon Valley seems to have dodged a bullet.

 

I'm afraid that he'll make Net Neutrality extinct. Trump even asked people to boycott Apple for their refusal to decrypt the iPhone 5c. So yay to more surveillance and built in backdoors in phones, tablets, and computers. Besides, did more surveillance and violations of privacy made us safer? I don't think so.

Not to mention, staunch republican Ted Cruz already called Net Neutrality as "Obamacare of the Internet", and just like Affordable Care Act, he wants Net Neutrality repealed.

I'm summing all of that up due to his ignorance of how that stuff works. He's not going to have the same opinions on cyber stuff like tech enthusiasts do.

 

Him getting with Elon, Jeff and Bill may change his opinion a little, depending on the agenda those guys have. I wasn't particularly excited about him meeting with Bill, personally.

If Elon Musk decides to run for president, I hope he wins. The problem with a lot of politicians is that they're not tech literate enough. Who knows, maybe legislators will make a law to coerce tech companies to disable security features upon FBI's request. Maybe like disabling sandboxing or ASLR so that they can remotely install tracking malware to someone else's computer.

Obamacare may be a failure but i don't see too much similarities between net neutrality and Obamacare lmao

This is what i'm expecting as well, Trump's no fool, he knows exactly what he's doing and he played the entire RNC from the start. Crushing them down and building them back up.
I think Elon, especially, can really help Trump see the good in many technological movements and maybe clear up some misconceptions.

It's a really weird situation because in one case, absolutely, almost none of our current leaders really understand encryption, net security, or the internet.

On another hand, i want my legislators to hold degrees in relevant fields like Law and i have no problems with the vast majority of them holding such degrees. (A case often gets made how "ridiculous" it is that there's little-to-no engineers or medical doctors in congress...As if that's where you should find them)

The bigger problem for me is the age difference, i understand experience is beneficial but you can expect younger politicians to keep up with American culture better than older ones.

No that was Harambe.

A shitload of people who felt uninterested in either major parties woke up at an ungodly early hour to vote for goddamn Harambe.

I doubt anyone voted for God-Emperor Cheeto man for the lolz as his campaign was very sincere.

Elon isn't going to run for President, lol. He's got two major projects/companies under his belt that he's active in, and he's wanting to change the world with them. So I don't think he's going to run for President.

 

The government isn't going to get their way with disabling security features for just any reason. They can already with warrants, so it's not like they're going to just up and decide to look at what you're doing on your PC just because, but even then there are lines they won't be able to cross as long as companies tell them to shove it like they've been doing (unlike Microsoft).

 

The companies that get told to hand over information technically aren't legally obligated unless it's a matter of national security from my understanding - much in the same way a police officer cannot search your vehicle at a stop no matter what they tell you, unless you actually give them a problem.

 

I can be completely wrong though, and I'm betting someone is going to correct me.

Personally this means nothing to me as I am already throttled to death by my ISP and net neutrality didn't really do anything. Companies just had to add a line in the small print to make the whole point invalid.

Assuming that your ISP is AT&T U-Verse. Whether you watch Game of Thrones from HBO or House of Cards from Netflix, it will have the same speed. Which means AT&T can't give more bandwidth to HBO nor can they throttle Netflix streaming.

I didn't vote for him as a joke, I just didn't want a strong possibility for war with Russia and its not like Hillary was good on NSA related topics either, as for net neutrality the government doesn't seem to be enforcing it anyway otherwise youtube and netflix wouldn't buffer on a 40mbps connection

Net Neutrality activists are also calling for artificial data caps to go away, so it kinda does have something to do with data caps.

I wouldn't trust those sources on anything, but it's good to get an outside opinion.

 

Also, I do think a lot of people are confusing the conservatives being against net neutrality as an ultra capitalism stance, but it's not. Their logic, which is completely fair, is that they don't want the government controlling everything to do with consumers as much as possible. This is why they were against ObamaCare as well. They want a free and open market within reason.

Nope. I, and most other's voted for trump because he was the better candidate.

We didn't want world war three with russia, and now we don't have to worry about that. If it had gone the other way, then right now you'd be a lot less concerned with technology business expansion in the US falling by 1%, but by where russia's nuclear submarines are, and how long it would take for them to be crushed in the upcoming war with NATO until they respond in the only way they can. He hasn't said a thing about how he views NN and appointing people who may have or do have opposing views does not automatically mean he thinks the same way.
