Self made portable hard drive

asdfghjkl987

Hey

I think this is the right area for this....

I have a brand new hard drive just laying around and I was thinking to convert it into a portable hard drive, but I don't want it to be one with external power.

Is that do able?

Thanks

It is 3.5, could you recommend a solution or the best way to do this?

If it is a SSD, then yes, you can buy external cases for USB 3.1, Thunderbolt, USB C etc for a number of form factors, or just straight up adapters (USB to SATA Data+Power (one cable))

If it is a HDD, then not without external power, though it may be possible with multiple USB hookups.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

Solitaire.

No need to shout...

I did a quick search and filter on NewEgg

I cannot vouch for any of these individually

There is no easy way to do this.

You need 8w for a normal 3.5 hdd, and a normal usb port gives .5 to 1A, so 2.5 to 5w.

Segate makes some 3.5 drives that are bus powered, but need usb C for the extra power, and supported motherboards. They also have low powered drives and a small battery to spin up the drive.
