It's overkill but it has the highest stock clock speed I think?  So yeah it'll work great.  Gaming is more GPU though.  If you are trying to decide between a 6700k and an i5 for pure gaming I would get an i5 unless you want to expand your work load in the coming years you'll have the CPU.

Probably the best CPU to pick for most games out there.

i7 is the sweet spot, people are still throwing around the false advice that it's overkill. Games are already starting to want more cores/threads (BF1. WD2) this is going to become the norm, ofc a 6600K will be fine for a while, but i7 will quickly become the gaming norm once DX12's grip tightens

The 6600k and the 6700k have nearly identical gaming performance.

Edit: It was a joke

that's complete bullshit...it's no longer 2011-2012 guys wake up and go check modern AAA games benchmarking the 6700K is quite a bit better nowadays.

Yes. You are correct. but the difference between something like 100 and 70 fps is nothing you will notice on a 60 Hz monitor ;)

well yeah then if you game on a 1080p 60hz monitor all you need is a weak core i5 CPU and mid-range GPU and then start saving money for a monitor that doesn't have specs from 2009 ;)

If you look at average framerates on random benchmarking videos and make yourself this idea from there then all the power to you but in reality there is a lot more to it than that when it comes to smootness of animation and micro-stutter free gaming experience, with good minimum FPS, tight frame-pacing and just overall perfectly fluid animation and for that a good powerful CPU with more headroom is required...i would suggest you watch Digital Foundry CPU benchmarking videos they go quite in depth in explaining why in gaming charts the core i5 and core i7 SEEM to perform SIMILARLY but once you hook them to a powerful GPU and a Gsync monitor for example you can instantly tell which is which.

yes? I mean that is the best gaming cpu available without going full enthusiastic... keep in mind that between a overclocked 6600k and the normal 6700 without overclocks I would say that going with the 6700 is a better cost-benefit choice but if you want to overclock everything and have full performance while budget is no issue the 6700k will work perfectly for gaming and multi-tasking.

it depends...if you spend 1500$ on gaming PC with a 450$ nvidia GPU and a 600$ Gsync 144hz IPS panel...100$ is nothing, it's not even 5% of what you've spent on your setup and it will improve your performance by a lot more than 5%.
