According to a poll conducted by a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Sunday claimed. The opinion poll on October 26th to November 9th showed that much like Apple, Samsung has amassed a cult following that will remain loyal to the brand. I'd like to ask a similar question to the ones asked by the poll to see what your guys' opinion is on that.

A global recall of fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 smartphones did not appear to hurt U.S. consumers' willingness to buy Samsung Electronics  phones, a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Sunday showed.

The survey conducted Oct. 26 to Nov. 9 found that current Samsung smartphone users were as loyal to their brand as Apple Inc (AAPL.O) iPhone customers. It also found that people who knew about the recall were as interested in Samsung phones as those who did not.

Samsung was plunged into a global scandal after Note 7 phones caught fire this year, prompting a worldwide recall. Some customers reported fixed phones overheated, leading Samsung to take back replacements as well. Investors expected Samsung customers would turn to alternatives, chiefly Apple's iPhone 7.

Among those aware of the recall, 27 percent would first consider a Samsung smartphone if they were to shop for a phone, the poll showed. Among those who did not know about the recall, 25 percent would look first at a Samsung device.

The poll found that Samsung's customers were fiercely loyal to their brand. Some 91 percent of current Samsung users would likely purchase another Samsung smartphone, and 92 percent of current users would probably buy another Samsung product in general.

That was similar to the brand loyalty among current iPhone owners: 92 percent would likely buy another iPhone and 89 percent would likely buy another Apple product.

To be sure, it was unclear how much the Samsung recall weighed on the minds of consumers. The Reuters/Ipsos poll measured how interested people were in buying Samsung phones, not how much the recall directly influenced their decisions.  

Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research said the recall was mostly limited to early adopters rather than the majority of Samsung's customer base, which limited negative user experiences.

"Your own personal experience trumps what you read and what people tell you," Dawson said.

Samsung has said that customers chose another Samsung model as a replacement for the Note 7 in a majority of instances, without giving more detail. It has said nearly 85 percent of the recalled Note 7 devices had been replaced or returned through its refund and exchange program as of Nov. 4.

 

I personally think that this is a bad thing, hurting the profits of Samsung will ensure that won't happen again, but they might not learn a lesson as effectively now that they know they have such an Apple like loyal following, and that mistakes made that aught not to be made can be forgiven so easily. As a Note 4 user, I have no intention of moving to current Samsung phones, I dislike (dislike is a nice way of phrasing I'd rather smash it with a hammer) unibody designs. I think they might be going down a dangerous route, since they apparently don't have to win back support.

For me personally, I know that one phone's design process is completely different from the next, and just because the note 7 is a little fishy, it doesn't mean that the galaxy s8 will be. somebody I know heard the news, and then actually got scared that their Galaxy s6 would blow up, and almost replaced it (before i told her not to)

The recall was done appropriately. What i don't like is how they drop software support for their devices. Apple keeps their hardware supported for years; which is why i would consider using a iPhone or an ubuntu phone when my phone becomes old.

Samsung have longer software support where I live, They still provide updates for my Note 4, recently got one, somewhere in the region of two years, while Apple just release majorly new OSes with super large hardware hang over which makes the device slower, I prefer Samsung's approach, at least the device is still usable at end of life.

I don't see the point of using a poll to determine the impact on Samsung's reputation.  People can be unreliable when it comes to self reporting answers for polls, often this is the only data you can have so it's the best information you could possibly get, but for consumer products you have something much more reliable; Sales Data.  Consumers vote with their wallets and the sales data, particularly of Samsung phones, will tell you the real story, whatever that story may be.

I don't think an opinion poll is that inaccurate here, but I don't think the sales of a different series of phone by Samsung will be affected much unless it too developed a problem, remember the Galaxy S range and Galaxy Note are different ranges and target somewhat different users, well they used to at least.

Well for one thing, if something catastrophic happens to a product of a Korean or Japan based company, you can pretty much bet there is going to be a large scale investigation and workers (even executives) are going to be fired.

 

The biggest example that strikes me is after the investigation of the crash of JAL 123. It was determined that a improper repair made by Boeing engineers that were over to Japan to repair the aircraft after a tail strike upon landing years before was the major cause of the accident. The pressure bulkhead was not repaired to specifications which eventually failed midflight, blowing off the entire vertical stabilizer and severing flight controls. Boeing pretty much walked away from this incident unscathed while the president of JAL at the time resigned, a JAL maintenance manager and an engineer who inspected the aircraft the day of both committed suicide because of the incident.

 

In contrast, a faulty ignition switch in GM vehicles from 2000 to 2004 caused the deaths of over 100 people worldwide when the ignition switch slipped into accessory mode, causing drivers to loose control of the vehicle including engine power and power steering, as well as disabling any safety equipment including airbags from deploying. This issue was brought up by engineers but was swept under the rug for years as GM concluded it was far more economical to just secretly change the part (mind you using the exact same part number so no one would notice) for new vehicles and not recall ones already on the road. To my knowledge, GM was only given a slap on the wrist from Congress and no executives were confirmed to been fired because of this.

 

Long story short, I have better faith in Government agencies and executives in Asia based companies to make sure this kind of fiasco doesn't happen again.. As we speak, there are reports that over 200 executives may be shown the door (http://www.androidheadlines.com/2016/10/report-samsung-sack-200-executives.html). And even though these are not confirmed, it's certainly more pro-active than any American based company I can think of.

Yes, I noted in recent years Samsung's design team might have changed,  something tells me it is about to change again massively.

Even with the whole bendgate fiasco Apple had, I didn't hear about any changes internally from Apple. Albeit it was a much much smaller issue and not as explosive as the Note 7; but certainly the iPhone 6 Plus could potentially catch fire if bent too far, which wasn't hard to do.

What? I commented on how if their reputation has indeed not been affected it might be bad. At no point did I ever comment my own personal opinion if it had or not, you need to read over it, I am more of the "I don't really know" camp anyways, I didn't even vote in that poll. I posted stories here before without my opinion and they moved, now I gave and you have an issue with that? The fuck do you people want? Go read the rules, you have to give an opinion, I gave one as unbiased as possible, can you not read? I think they changed the design a little when the issue arrised quietly, but I don't work at Apple or own an early and late model 6 Iphone to compare.

Anyways on the subject of this thread, I have a Galaxy S6. Next year when our phones are paid off, I'd consider getting a Galaxy S8 as long as Samsung doesn't follow Apple's footsteps and remove the headphone jack. Especially if Samsung decided to create a proprietary connector.

I like Samsung phones but I hate unibody, which was why I used to love them so much, also not liking Androids default UI kinda made me love them by not liking the competition, but now I'm kinda in limbo for when my Note 4 can no longer keep up.

While I'd still buy a Samsung phone, I'd no longer buy them right away. I'd wait for a couple of months to see what happens.

Design processes will change for the phone, but chances are high it'll still use the same parts suppliers.

To think Samsung needs even more financial strain to learn it's lesson is ridiculous. They've already lost billions of dollars because of this.

I understand that, but I just turn mine down, preventing the problem instead of a solution that makes my UI hideous. But I also understand that most monitors have TERRIBLE UIs.

thats a shame. I dont have a lot of apps and I'm concerned about security. Iv only upgraded my previous android phones because OEM drops them

Default android is not really my thing, it does a lot of things asinine in my mind, I like have more OS options and things like the easily changeable font, I have actually paid for fonts from the Samsung app store because they're awesome fonts.
