Help? High refresh rate on a budget?

Trav_X

What kind of high refresh rate computer setup could I make for around $650 USD? I currently have a 2560x1080 Ultrawide 60hz monitor (LG 34UM58-P) but I kind of want to get into high refresh rate cause I've heard people prefer Hz over aspect ratio. I want something like this build: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/82gLrH#cx2031626 but for less money.

What's the cheapest GPU I could pull off for 1080p 140+ hz? RX 480? I'm not talking triple A titles, I'm talking like League of Legends, Smite, CSGO, PAYDAY 2, Rocket League, Binding of Isaac, Brawlhalla, Armored Warfare, and other F2P titles and easy to run games. I don't got the money to spend on triple A titles when these games are much more fun. How cheap could I make a suggest with a good upgrade path that could handle this?

My budget would be around $1000 USD but the PG248Q is $350.

and I've heard from people before that you NEED an i7 for 144+ hz. Is this true? I didn't think the CPU had much affect on Hz and refresh rate. By the way, the PG248Q supports G sync but idk if that goes up in the 160+ hz, maybe an NVIDIA gpu would be better? A 1060 3GB can pull off 1080p, right?

MSI GE72 Apache Pro-242 - (5700HQ : 970M : 16gb RAM : 17.3" : Win10 : 1TB HDD : Razer Anansi : Some mouse) - hooked up to a 34UM58-P (WFHD) in dual screen

GPU wise I think the GTX 1070 is a good bet. It can do standard 1080p at 144hz without a sweat.

EDIT: With your budget this card would be hard to make work, but it's an amazing value per dollar over a 1060 or 1050.

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special-_-

An Nvidia gpu will always be better with a g-sync monitor, especially with the current gen of GTX 10XX cards being head and shoulders avoce the AMD competition.

As for CPU bottlenecks, they start becoming more evident when you're breaking into the triple digits of framerate. What CPU do you currently have?

When in doubt, re-format.

Umm 144FPS is stupidly difficult to reach, don't underestimate the power it requires.

I have an rx 480 and a 144Hz 1080p monitor and i rarely reach the 144fps mark.

Even in older games with settings turned down a bit, yes it's not a 1070 but still, don't expect it to run 144fps solid in every title, that won't happen.

I'm thinking of maybe fitting In a 1060 if I find some good deals on eBay with quad core Xeons. I already have 16gb of DDR3 which saves me the price of buying ram, and I don't necessarily need an SSD although I could just get a 120gb for OS and use a spare and VERY old 500gb HDD for game storage.

Yeah, I knew LoL would be easy cause I can almost already push that on a 970M in my laptop. If I turn down a few settings my CS gets into the 160's. What GPU would you suggest on my tiny ass budget? :D

Idk, I like high resolution monitors from the times I've used my friends 1440p and higher monitors, but I don't feel the need for it in gaming, especially since I can't afford a 4K gaming setup. Because I'm stuck at the range of 1440p and below hardware, I'd luck to at least push my luck at higher refresh. Having also used a 144hz monitor my friend owns, it was quite nice. Having a 34" 2560x1080 Ultrawide has been nice, but pixel density sucks when I really take a good luck at it. The pixel density is basically almost worse than 27" 1080p. But when I'm in game, I've noticed that I DONT notice resolution too much. It's only when I stop playing and look closely at the pixels. I guess I just want hz because resolution hasn't ever really been much of an issue to me, especially since a 24" 1080p monitor has a good enough pixel density that you can't always clearly pick each and every one out individually.

I have a laptop with specs in my description. I have a real shit desktop that I kinda donated to the parents, but I wouldn't be using any of the parts since they are all pretty low for gaming regardless.

I'm only really looking at those easy titles like LoL and CS, but even if I'm cutting near 90-100 on harder games I'd be okay, cause it's more than 60 :P

Am also pro resolution, allthough I also see the value of higher fps. But would say that anything form 100 up is overall good enough. Higher actual fps that you can see has diminshing returns for perception. So the step from 60 to 100 is better noticable then from 100 to 144.

Think a 480 or 1060GB is overall good enough for the games you mention, but the 1070 is a safer bet if you really want to max out.

Would a 3Gb model be okay for 1080p if it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a 6GB?

Now that I see what you'll be playing I agree that a 1060 is better, and while performance per dollar it's not as great as a 1070, at the same time you'd be wasting your money on a 1070 if that's all you'll be playing!

Yeah, I'd totally go 1070, but the price is a tad out of my range. I've been at 60hz my entire life, never had more than that, and the best resolution I've ever OWNED in a monitor is 2560x1080. I'd love to go 3440x1440 or 4K, but I just don't have the budget.

You can upgrade in steps. Buy the GPU first and the screen later for example. Or if your current GPU is decent enough to run a reso you want with some tinkering on settings (and can live with that for a while) buy the screen first.

Allthough not prefered and for the real whoa effect you want it all at once, but taking steps also get you there.

Yeah, 34" 1080 Ultrawide is kinda shitty but I live with it. I've seen the VG248QE before, how do you like the colors? How do you think it'd compare to something like a PG248Q? They have very similar specs besides 144hz and 180hz.

That is true. I'd prefer just a bulk purchase because I'm actually buying this as part of a gift almost, my parents said they would pick up the cost of a portion of my build, and the rest comes out of my pocket, and I guess I'm saying that I'd like to just finalize the purchase so I won't end up paying more than I have to on MY end in the future :DxD

The colors are typical TN panel colors. I would have preferred an IPS panel but I couldnt find a 144hz 1080p ips where i lived so oh well. I have it next to an Asus PB278Q (1440p 60hz ips) and the ips looks much better. difference in response time... i cant tell the difference
