Dell releases Alienware 13inch laptop - First gaming laptop with OLED Display - w/ 100% Adobe RGB - Quad Core CPU - GTX 1060

GoodBytes

Completely missed any announcement and reveal... Dell releases a new gaming laptop that is only 13inch and feature some serious high performance. It operates fairly cool and is fairly quiet (considering a gaming system (based on reviews I saw)). The system features an OLED monitor with a resolution os 2560x1440 with 100% Adobe RGB color coverage based on reviews

CS1703G0017_aw_laptop_alienware13_gaming

Like other Dell systems, it features RGB touchpad an keyboard which support all colors.

In terms of specs, it feature a Quad-Core 6th generation ( Skylake ) CPU ( Intel Core i5-6300HQ or  Intel Core i7-6700HQ ) and is powered by an Nvidia GTX 1060 with 6GB of dedicated memory. The system features upgradable RAM starti with 8GB 2133Hz DDR4 and goes up to 16GB 2667MHz DDR4 or 32GB 2400 MHz DDR4, and options in between, like faster 8GB DDR4.

As for storage, it features 256GB PCIe SSD. Windows Hello supported as well via facial recognition.

The system is indeed heavy, like all gaming system, due to the dual heatsink/fans and additional hardware (GPU). It weight: 5 lbs (2 kg)

As ports, it is the opposite of Apple..  it has pretty much everything

  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Thunderbolt / USB Type-C port (USB 3.0) [external GPU like the Razor Core apparently works with it (based on a review I saw), but no official support]
  • USB 3.0 Type A port (the classic port shape)
  • USB 3.0 Type A with PowerShare Technology
  • DisplayPort 1.2
  • HDMI 2.0
  • Alienware Graphics Amplifier Port (Alienware own external GPU connector)
  • 2x Headphone plug where you can convert either to a mic port.

Starting price is $1,199 US... HOWEVER... don't through your credit card at your screen... the 1,199$ US model starts with a craptastic 1366 x 768 TN panel, and 180GB M.2 SATA-3 SSD

For $1,599, you start with PCIe SSD of 256GB, which is pretty cool, and the display is a much more acceptable 1920x1080 IPS panel. If you want blacks to be ink black, amazing colors of OLED, the system starts at $1,799, but you also switch to the faster i7 CPU mentioned above.

Worse deal compared to what I got for my AW 15 R3.  $2000 for my custom one.  Still very impressive that they fit all of that into a 13 inch form factor.

I saw a review of this earlier and first thing I thought was two external graphic ports , can you use both razer and Alienware and SLI the GPUs? Probably not but it would be sick ??

I think the only people who will buy those laptops are either "hardcore gamer" or video game developer (who uses unreal engine cry engine all the time)..

Still I haven't even met a gamer who will go that far to buy a machine like that......

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

For people that likes to play games, but actually want portability unlike most other gaming laptops, including Alienware very own larger systems.

I want Linus to review the 13" spectre x360 with the OLED. You can get it with great specs and a big SSD for around $1,599. I'm hoping to get one in the spring.

It has ths same problem as many Clevo/Sager laptops (and others) do imo. Pairing a 1060 with a 6700HQ or even worse, a 6300HQ. It will bottleneck. At least put a 6700. A laptop of that size should be able to keep it cool. It's not an R17, but should be able.

But ignoring the OLED, that's 1440p. Haven't seen that in a long time on a laptop. We need more of those.

Any reason why it doesn't have 3.1 ports and has only a DP 1.2?

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.
