Why does upload speed in UK suck so much ?

Well cant compare US with UK. Its like Jupiter vs Earth :D

There's a lot of good internet speeds in the US. Just so in my area I only have 2 choices one being DSL or the next one being over priced data caping Comcast internet.

24 down (3 down) is enough but it could be better. I like not having my data capped or being slowed down from cable lines because people near by are also on.

The UK is seriously just USA beta. IDK about Europe's internet speeds, but I guess they're gonna be faster, at least in the more affluent parts.

Well I'm supposed to get 16/1 (I pay for that, this is one of the worst results i got, usually i get 12/0.9), which by itself is retarded to me as i live in a german city with more than a million inhabitants. Government doesn't give a single fuck about internet here.

Upload speed sucks everywhere on Residential internet. Most ISP's do not want residential internet hosting web services ( FTP, HTTP, Game Servers, etc. ). It's also a preventive measure against botnet's and DDOS attacks.

This. ISPs limit residential upload speeds because they don't want businesses buying residential plans. Business plans have faster upload speeds. Besides, most non power users have no use for large upload speeds. What does the typical person every upload that needs to be super fast? Nothing. We only want fast upload speeds because we want to run file and game servers, both of which our ISP probably doesn't want us to do.

When I was younger I ran a completely successful game server for a game called altitude on a 2mbps upload speed. Very little to no lag lag, even with 20 people in the server. (Unless, of course, the person was on the other side of the world.)

ISPs being assholes. I get less than 10% in the US too. If I remember correctly, people are simply attracted to larger numbers.

Several ISPs speed limit uploads of their basic fibre packages to 2Mb/s, so you'll need to upgrade to a better package that does offer the max available upload speed.

That doesnt say anything at all. I know every ISP has 10+ upload BUT only on packages over 70mbps. I was saying that low speed packages get 5℅ upload speed of what their download is whereas hogher speed packages provide over 20% in some cases. There is no standard...

Yeah they're not bad a bit slow over the phone but they'll get you sorted plus they're my only real option for fast internet where I live. When I was at uni I got Virgin which are by far the best I was getting 90 down and 40 up piratebay was nuts I'd download a 1080p hrrm hrrm legal torrent in under a min.

The pumped up download speeds may be in part due to the marketing of download speeds, where little attention has been given to upload so far. But with the ever increasing cloud storage services there is ever growing demand for faster upload.

Another reason is that everyone wants a so called "unlimited" package, so the ISPs need some way to limit performance for cost. If people were more receptive to a pay for usage model, the ISPs wouldn't have any incentive to cripple the link speeds. It would also get rid of those horribly vague "excessive use" penalties they put in contracts.

Still annoys me we lag so far behind the far east. A friend in Japan, over 10 years ago, had 100meg symmetric connection (ftth, none of that fttc crap they're doing here) for a very affordable price.

The infrastructure is bad I agree, and yes you can possibly say the ISPs are being assholes... but for like £5 or something to have almost twice the download speed and nearly 10x the upload speed it'd be worth the extra £5 wouldn't it?  especially if you're griping about the upload speed.

AFAIK all the ISPs have limited the upload speed to 2Mbit/s if on the medium fibre package... mainly because of the BT backbone.

I would love to have much higher myself, for both download and upload speeds FWIW... and I think we pay too much compared with some other countries. But unfortunately BT was privatized back in the 80s (?) and they want to make lots of money for shareholders etc etc. Basically nothing we can do about it. All we can do is pay more for services we need right now, and if you don't want to pay more then you can't get a higher upload speed on most ISPs, there may be some boutique ISPs that may offer higher upload speeds, but don't know. If you don't want to pay more, then I'm afraid you have to live with what you've got... at least you have the option to pay more to get it, some people would love to pay £5 more or whatever to get better download and upload speeds.

The idea which was implemented in the United Kingdom for internet honestly isn't terrible, it's just maintaining the infrastructure. My understanding is that most of the wiring is underground and the customer only has a single cable (for internet) to the home, generically DSL. In America, because of the immense versatility every ISP maintains a different infrastructure, and homes which have multiple ISPs will have multiple cable runs to the home. Let's not get started on monopolies with poles, and ISPs. Honestly now it's just getting the new infrastructure deployed. Considering G. Fast is a thing, they can make use of much of the legacy networks. Fiber is the future, but financially it's not a feasible option. Neither is G. Fast, but G. Fast is a cheaper overall cost to achieve near gigabit speeds over phone lines.

Remix
