Why does upload speed in UK suck so much ?

Thony

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5763087903

Less than 10% of download, im so disgusted... Is the infrastructure in this country this bad or is it ISPs being assholes ?

The UK has a major infrastructure issue. In this case the height of performance being rolled out across the country is VDSL, which is still running over the old copper phone lines, its a shorter run but its still basic unshielded copper. The way it works is it assumes a consumer on the end of that line and that it is more beneficial to assign 90% of the frequencies to download. The alternative you would have is about 20/20 instead of 2/38, since most of the time you would be getting better use out of the download that is the way its setup.

This only changes when you go to a true bidirectional mechanism, at which point up = down.

I live in the caribbean and my upload speed is supposed to be around 15mbps and I don't even get close to that unless I ping a server in florida

its like that in the US too. ISP's know that most people don't use their upload nearly as much as their download, and so they "save money" (barley anything) by reducing your speed. it also entices people to pay a hefty bit more for a slightly higher speed.

What are you on? You don't see my stable 19Mbps upload? :) (but fuck me, rip 15-16Mbps of down speeds since I got this FTTC installed ;-; Useless talktalk modem/routers not supporting the feature that was supposed to increase speeds...only if they supported G.INP)

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Don't worry, if G.INP is live on your cabinets and if you have a HG663 then you'll find your download speeds lowering quite dramatically :/

My speeds for example, 2 months it took for the first jump in speeds (yes, 5Mbps lower speeds overnight) so...rip

If you'd like to know why your speeds lower then I can explain it to yer ;)

True true ;) (Virgin is the only ISP that has separate lines from BT on a national scale but they use P2P apparently so during peak times, your speeds dip dramatically...)

I still remember using them in my very old house...stable 20Mbps (then 30 when they put everyone's speeds up) as there wasn't many Virgin users in that area :P

Look at my shitty upload speed -.-

5753007430.png

Upload speed sucks everywhere on Residential internet. Most ISP's do not want residential internet hosting web services ( FTP, HTTP, Game Servers, etc. ). It's also a preventive measure against botnet's and DDOS attacks.

I wouldn't mind giving up a little down for a bit more up... VM (and ntl before them) have always been skimpy on upload compared to ADSL which have a smaller ratio between.

Yo waddup. Upload is horrible but...I talked to one of my tech guys and he said the ISP does not want to increase any upload because it costs alot more. I mean I wouldn't mind sacrificing a little bit of download for a little more upload though.
