VR Headsets and Herpes

As vr becomes more widespread about how awesome it is, many would like to get one. But the cost of such a vr headset like, the oculous or vive is out of reach by many due to its premium price tag. So the next best thing, is to try it out at events or stores where they have demo units. Problem is as one person tries it out and passes it over the next, so does the increase of passing infections such as eye herpes. Eye herpes or simplex virus, causes "inflammation and discomfort around the eyes like a cold sore, some have around their mouth." The infection is passed through people, from those who already has it. And one unlucky developer got it, after putting on a vr headset that was contaminated with the virus. So next time, anyone who wants to try it out, make sure to bring some disinfecting wipes and clean them before putting it on.

I'm going to hell... I got a serious case of the giggles reading that before considering the fact that it's quite a serious issue that resulted in the poor individual getting an incurable disease.

 

That being said, I have to question the info provided by this unnamed game studio about this unnamed developer. Indirect transmission of herpes is incredibly rare. The virus can only survive for any viable duration in living skin cells and you only typically shed dead skin... There's a reason you can't contract herpes simplex in your buttocks from sitting on the same toilet as someone who has it.

If all headsets are made similarly to my Vive, the contact part is a kinda foam sponge. It's going to be near impossible to clean and in a multi-user environment the only safe way would be to get a stock and issue one to each person. Hard surfaces can still be wiped if needed.

 

I had reservations when previously taking in my Vive to use at work (as more space than at home). I ended up demo-ing it to many people...

You can get covers that can be wiped clean, like this.

I wonder if disposable soft plastic glasses can be of any help. Put on plastic glasses and then the vr headset. When finish, just throw plastic glasses into trash.
