selling HDD's and can't get dban working

I'm trying to wipe drives before I sell them and when I go to boot from my usb drive that has dban on it i' getting an error that says "missing operating system"

How are you mounting the ISO to the drive? Sounds like you're doing it wrong

There's no need for third-party software when Windows has one of the best built-in. It'll re-zero your drive and will take about one hour per 250GB as it breaks the MFT/MBR and re-zeroes.

Yes, but there's no need, unless you want to run "clean all" three times.

"Clean all override" is for drives and partitions that contain an OS. Override tells the drives controller to forget about the lock on the MBR and to proceed with the "clean all".

 

You won't see a percentage.

I'm pretty sure that right clicking a drive, then clicking format, then unchecking "quick format" will zero out the disk without any need for command line utilities. 

 

Personally I use shred (or scrub... I forget which) on a bootable linux flash drive to securely erase any drives I'm giving away or selling.

Every freeware could recover 80 to 100 % of data after you do this. Only takes time and a free drive.

 

Diskpart is a good tool but I you are worry about you data or you work in business this is not enough. Professional tools did recover up to70. I money is no problem you ore the one who wants your data could get a professional data recovery company to do this.

 

Deban is one of the safest ways to destroy data. Deban gives you presets of erase options or you could select it manually. For example you could format+ write zero to each block+ format + write rnd  string to each block. Do this in loop 20 time or what ever you want. 

 

Deban has a usb boot version use this.

 

BTW.  Best way to get safe rid of you data is hammer time till its flat as a paper. It's the funniest way too. ;D

Quick format and format only break MBR/MFT. All the ones and zeroes are left on the platters.

Ah, it seems you are correct. I mistakenly assumed that the additional length of a normal (not quick) format was the zeros being written to disk. I was wrong. It's simply scanning for bad sectors.

You don't need DBAN for a secure wipe; You can clean the drive in diskpart as above, and then you can initialize it, format it, and run CCleaner. It has a drive wipe utility under Tools, and you can choose how many passes you want to give it.

okay.  I've been sitting at "DISKPART> clean all" for the past 13-14 hrs.  It's a 4TB drive so maybe that's why but I should get something that says it has completed correct?

You should, but if not, you'll eventually get a fresh DISKPART> prompt. And yeah, zeroing a 4TB drive would take some time. Not sure about 13-14 hours though... That's a little strange.

Hmm, I think I started it around 11 last night and it's still going.  The disk can't be viewed from file explorer either.

No, it'd be locked down while it's doing that. Essentially you're in "hurry up and wait" mode right now. When it finishes, I'd recommend running DiskCheckup or other software capable of performing hard drive SMART self-tests and giving them a go (start with short, then extended if no error) to be sure the drive is still OK.

Hmm, how long do you think I should give it.  And if nothing changes should I just restart?
