Ok, is this a motherboard or SSD issue?

A few days ago i posted here on the forums about an issue i had with my PC after a power outage.

It felt like it was sorted out for good, but apparently isn't, because the thing is doing the same again today.

Let's start by this, it was working just fine in the morning, i was abble to play games and do my work, but i came home tonight to find out that my shiny last-weekend installed Windows wasn't booting.

Tried to restore the system, it booted, installed my drivers, tried to reboot aaaand it freezed on the BIOS splash screen. 

Cleared the CMOS, tried to move RAM dimms around, put some new SATA cables, no solution.

I recon something may be shot, but what is it? Is it the SSD or the mobo?

Idk? How about checking the SSD to find out...?

There's a reason S.M.A.R.T is on drives....so you can use it to find out if something is wrong.

Could you teach me to do so? I never properly tested an SSD before...

Download crystaldiskinfo, run crystaldiskinfo, look at crystaldiskinfo

I'm to get it to boot now, because, like i said before, sometimes it fails to boot or it freezes on the BIOS splash screen.

Let's see if i can find out whats causing it...

Ok, got it to boot now and installed crystaldiskinfo.

The program says both the SSD and the HDD are "100% good", so it may have to do with the BIOS itself...

Yeah, I would guess motherboard, it's one of the most sensitive components.

And it's an intermittent fault as well, sometimes it will boot just fine, others it will just simply not boot, sometimes i have to manually select the boot drive, sometimes it gets stuck on the ASRock splash screen.

I'll do some more testing and see what i can come up with, if the mobo is junk, i'll get a Z97 and upgrade the CPU, i was thinking about doing that for a while.

Update on this:

When this debacle happened, i ordered a new BIOS chip from Seventec and i kept using a simple Gigabyte H81 mobo i borrowed from a friend.

Today the new BIOS chip arrived, i inserted it on the mobo, started, and guess what? Now it works like it should.

The power outage fried the BIOS chip.

As a bonus, it solved a mysterious error message i had on startup, a message that said "FW Status Recovery Error", which i could never find out what it was.

The next time you can boot properly, reflash the BIOS with either a newer version or older if you just updated.

Take a look at my latest reply, i replaced the BIOS chip with a brand new one.
