IEEE Formalizes 2.5 and 5Gbps Ethernet Standard

Recently made available on some products Although capable products have been on the market since 2014/2015 but now officially formalized, IEEE standard P802.3bz defines boh the 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps standard over existing infrastructure. The 2.5Gbps speed will be supported on CAT5e cable and 5Gbps will be supported on CAT6 cabling. Distances are formally mentioned in the article but I suspect they will be around the same as current gigabit speeds on existing cabling. This has been mostly driven by the increase in 802.11AC wireless adoptions which can theoretically deliver speeds of 5Gbps and beyond.

Hopefully 2.5 and 5GBASE-T equipment will actually be somewhat affordable. It's all well and good defining and establishing the standard, there's not much point if it's as expensive as 10GBSE-T equipment is. 

 

May be a good middle ground for those (like myself) wanting to expand beyond 1Gbps for the local network but don't want to spend thousands on the 10GbE equipment required.

Depends on how many ports you want. If you just need 1 or 2 then the WS-C3560CX-8XPD-S can do it for about $1000. Going beyond that you're looking at a 3650, 3850, or something like a Meraki MS350-24X. Not sure the price on the comparable switches from Aruba (3810 series) but it looks like only Cisco and Aruba make multi-gigabit switches, or at least the only ones I could find right now.

Meanwhile I get 800 Mb/s DL and 500Mb/s UL on Cat 6 Gigabit Ethernet.

 

Now I can only imagine what 5 or 10 Gigabit will be like :D.

Eh, I've found 256Kbps is already exorbitant. Who needs these kinds of speeds? The military? We got man to the moon using 120Kbps communication for Pete's sake.

 

If you can't wait 20 seconds for a web page, it wasn't worth visiting anyway.

If the ISP want to limit me to 142222 oreos/month and my computer can recive 444 oreos/s the ISP better deliver at that speed. If they limit how many orios I get, I don't want to wait for them to be deliverd. I'd atleast expect express delivery for free. :P

There is 40Gbit, but a 4-NIC switch last I saw cost about 90K USD. There's also 100Gbit for datacenter, but that's limited to very short distances.

4 bits = 1 nibble

I call BS. If that really did what you say my university would've chosen that over the 50G Infiniband switches we got for our Broadwell E7 supercomputer.

Unless you're talking about the ASIC chip itself processing higher level traffic in which case it depends on what traffic is going through and what you're trying to do. For every 8 ports there is a single ASIC chip dedicated to every 8 ports and if you need to do QoS or some other processing in which case it might not be able to handle full bandwidth. I haven't gotten that far in my testing yet. I know on the Generation 1 Nexus 9k products there is a problem with carving up enough space to provide all the features which is solved with Cisco specific ASICs in the Generation 2 models that moved away from Broadcom ASIC chips to Cisco made ASIC chips.

 

For pure L2/L3 traffic though just going in and switching across the box, no additional features, it can handle the full line-rate.

Yah, for some reason we decided to go with off the shelf hardware/chips for the first generation of 9K platforms. The new stuff though, the second generation stuff with custom ASIC chips, now that's a beast. Not sure if the 9332 has a generation 2 equivalent on the market yet or not but some of the other stuff that does have it which I've gotten my hands on can do QoS very well.

It's not a "standard", it's a standard.  And it absolutely is Ethernet.  Both 25 and 50GE will see more and more deployment in data centers soon, as more and more Top-of-Rack switches start being built with the appropriate chipsets that support it.  Same with the NICs in servers.

It's not a "standard", it's a standard.  And it absolutely is Ethernet.  Both 25 and 50GE will see more and more deployment in data centers soon, as more and more Top-of-Rack switches start being built with the appropriate chipsets that support it.  Same with the NICs in servers.

Should have made my post better, I meant to say RJ45, over SFP copper ethernet it's definitely possible.
