GTX 1050 and GTX 1050Ti

NumLock21

1050's going to be a good upgrade for OEM PCs like the 750 ti was.  Not something somebody around here should be interested in but the 2gb vRAM limitation won't matter to that crowd.

The 1050 ti... is a bit more of an oddball.  Not sure how justifiable the card will be at $150 msrp, only a bit behind the 1060 3gb which will probably far outperform it on paper (30%-40% I'm guessing for the CUDA count).  It'll be like the 4gb 960 of last gen, a niche for high res on a budget.

Why do people do this?

The 970 did NOT have 3.5GB of VRAM, it had 4. It's just that the last .5GB was slower. It's not like the last 512MB was unusable: they weren't.

Is a Ford Fiesta unusable just because it's beaten in a drag race by a Mustang?

Have fun using those 512MB with 1/10 of the memory bandwidth.

It effectively has 3.5GB. Get over it.

I'd just like to say that I'm not an NVIDIA fanboy, if you're thinking I'm blindly defending them. My current card is AMD, as was my last one, as was the one before that. But to say it has 3.5GB of VRAM is wrong, there's no two ways about it.

I don't take issue to the fact that the last half a gig is much slower, I know that it is. What I take issue to is the fact that the person I originally replied to about this said, offhand, "The GTX 970 had 3.5GB of VRAM", which was totally incorrect. It had four. Period.

Well you can't use the 512MB in a game without stuttering. You get the same result as if there where only 3.5GB to begin with.

Yeah there are 4GB on the card, physically. You can only use 3.5GB in a real world gaming scenario though.

It's fair to say it has 3.5GB even if it's technically incorrect.

As far as I call tell, ACU can have some issues, while Shadow of Mordor won't:

Either way, once I get this rig up to 16GB of RAM again (8GB isn't enough for FO4+mods), I'm going with SLI.

Fewer cores, fewer TMUs, many things the same... Is the clock speed jump, combined with whatever IPC changes occurred between Maxwell and Pascal enough to make this a significant improvement over the 950?

There were no IPC improvements...and there hasn't been in any in many many generations. Good news is that makes comparing cards much easier.

That's kinda wrong.

It is not 3.5GB. It is 3.5GB of VRAM that is running at full speed. It's not that you couldn't use the last 512MB of it.

That being said I'm confused as to what Nvidia's doing with the 1050 Ti. I was expecting something a bit more... I guess spectacular(?) compared to what's there.

Jut like we don't count the Windows pagefile as physical RAM because it's way too slow to work as such, I choose not to count the really slow other .5 as actual video RAM. It's a buffer that's too slow to do the job it was made to do.

Now what would be awesome is if someone with some savvy took the slow chips out and soldered some fast memory in there, then rewrote the firmware. Effectively turning the 970 into an actual 4GB card.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

No, its actually not. It only affects frame rate and frame times in as far as I can tell, 1 game. Also, you don't even know why the memory is slow do you? Because the vRAM is all GDDR5, and in the case of mine Samsung which can manage 8000MHz when properly cooled (half the vRAM is on the back). Let me show you again the proof of a GTX 970 actually having 4GB of vRAM, and the explanation as to why the last 512MB is slow (BTW, Windows 10 is already using over 330MB vRAM prior to the test):

Let's be blunt here: access to the 0.5GB of memory, on its own and in a vacuum, would occur at 1/7th of the speed of the 3.5GB pool of memory.

I don't know how slow slow is, but 1/7th looks pretty slow.

As for the games where it's seen issues, I can count two: RoTR and Mirror's edge Catalyst. thankfully one can tweak settings to turn it into a non-issue.

Even if there is a lot of IPC improvement, the GTX 950 has 20% more CUDA than the 1050 (non Ti). On the other hand, perhaps it will be easy to overclock it to 2000MHz, which would amount to a very hefty overclock.

I will take you on your word that it's fine. 1/7th of the faster RAM is still the same bandwidth as dual channel DDR3. But I will continue to recommend 6GB+ or HBM to people not in a budget.
