FAA bans Samsung Note 7 passengers from using their phone regardless if you have the replacement

Until further notice, the  Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) bans on all flights passengers from using, turning on, or even charging  their Samsung Galaxy Note 7, regardless if you have replaced your phone or not already with Samsung or your carrier, The Verge reports.

 

 

In a statement (https://www.faa.gov/news/updates/?newsId=86504&cid=TW475) from the FAA, they says:

Passengers may not turn on or charge the devices when they carry them on board a plane. Passengers must also protect the devices from accidental activation, including disabling any features that may turn on the device, such as alarm clocks, and must not pack them in checked luggage.

So basically, you can have the phone with you, turned off. And not touch it. If you do, and reported, this can be seen as a criminal action like.

While the number of cases of exploding phones has been small for compared to the number of phones sold. The news is devastating for the company brand model.

Do you think that Samsung can continue with the Note line, or will have to rebrand it or take a break for a few years? Or would it have 0 impact?

Well there are people like me who are waiting to be able to purchase the Note 7 again, and will do asap when it's available, because it is one of - or in my opinion the best phone on the market right now. 

But of course this is a pretty small view, the number of people who will buy the Note 7 compared to the ones who were going to before the recall will decrease a lot (It didn't even get time to release fully in a lot of countries including the UK). 

As for re-branding, I don't think it's needed. Although outside of this issue, there are speculations that Samsung is making a new flagship device anyway the 'Galaxy X' and that they will push the s8 launch forward to cover this, but that's all speculation.

not to mention samsung has made plenty of phones that dont blow up so a fixed newer model is not to be trusted but other samsung ones are?

The Note 7 has a serious exploding problem. afaik no other major phone had a global recall due to explosions.

 

There is no (easy) way for anyone to know if a note 7 is original or a replaced one.

Samsung released the IMEI checker tool already. 

Just need to go to this site: http://www.samsung.com/us/note7recall/

Find the IMEI number in your settings (says how to on the site) annnddd done. 

 

Or even easier, use the Samsung+ app and it'll tell you right on there.

So is it reasonable for the flight attendants to ask each and every person using a Galaxy Note 7 to verify that? And what if they don't have service (i.e. they're already in the air)? Then there's the issue of people hiding the device so they don't have to have it checked. It's already hard enough to know if it's a note 7 or some other smartphone as it is let alone determine which variant of the note 7 it is. 

 

The only reasonable solution is to just ban it as a whole for the time being.

You simply said there's no easy way for 'anyone' to know it it's an original or replaced Note 7; I simply showed 2 easy ways.

I misunderstood that you were talking specifically about on flights. While I do agree for now it's reasonable to ban it as a whole please read below. 

 

 

On the actual FAA post (an American administration) it isn't talking about the Note 7 specifically all the way through, it refers to it, and then gives the guideline which is to be followed with all "recalled or defective lithium batteries and lithium battery-powered devices" and it then urges airlines to follow these guidelines and make sure people are aware.

This thread is slightly sensational; there is no universal 'ban', nor is there anywhere that says you wont be able to take your Note 7 on board even if you prove it's a new device before you board. If anything the U.S. hazardous material regulations don't apply to post recall devices, and thus can't be enforced on affected flights.

I don't get why not everyone is following with the recall. IMO I'd rather be stuck with a shit phone for a few months than have it explode on my lap

Even half a percent is EXTREMELY high considering the nature of the defect. .5% of 13 million (#~ of s7 Edge sales) is 65,000. 

 

The fire/explosion rate of the Note 7 is significantly higher than that of other phones -- otherwise, there wouldn't be such a commotion going on (it's not like previous phones haven't had smoke/fire issues in the past).

I don't think Samsung will continue the Note line after this, it's a reputation that even has people asking if my note 4 is going to go up in flames. I also have heard several opinions be voiced by people that they don't trust Samsung as a whole now. There is also some news that other Samsung phones have gone up See here

Sorry, but I have to agree with the ban.  As they said in the WAN show, given the higher rate of explosions the Note 7 suffers, if even one of these exploded in a place like a plane, where it's a highly pressurized and oxygen-rich environment, the fallout would be enormous.  After all, we're not just talking melted phones - one of these took out a Jeep.  That's a pretty big danger. 

 

The best thing for Samsung to do now is probably to just move on to the next phone in the line and give up on the Note 7.  Once a product has this bad a reputation in the public eye, it's better to just move away from it.  Not every Pinto in the 70's exploded either.  But do people want to buy them when they see them?  Nope.

The FAA wasn't fast to act when American made planes had design issues or manufacturing defects. Can never trust the FAA anymore. Especially when most of the people who worked for them end up lobbying on behalf of Boeing after they retire. How could you regulate an industry one day and then lobby for it the next?

 

Yea, they want to prevent an event in which a Note 7 explodes onboard and aircraft. But they don't take the same precautions by immediately grounding the entire fleet when a new aircraft model suffers a mechanical problem. Even if lives were lost.
